Free online NEF to TIFF converter

TIFF is required by some print labs, publishing systems, scanners, and image editors that cannot use Nikon RAW files directly. Exporting an NEF as TIFF creates a high-quality rendered image for editing, delivery, or a rendered archive copy.

NEF and TIFF formats

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon’s RAW camera format, used by Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It stores sensor data, capture metadata, previews, and camera settings rather than a fully rendered image; Nikon cameras may create uncompressed, lossless-compressed, or compressed NEF files depending on the model and settings.

RAW processing software interprets that sensor data to apply white balance, demosaicing, exposure adjustments, lens corrections, noise reduction, and color rendering. Nikon NX Studio, Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable, and RawTherapee can open supported NEF files, although new camera models may require software updates.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster-image format that stores rendered pixels. It supports 8-bit and 16-bit RGB images, embedded ICC color profiles, metadata, alpha channels, and lossless compression, making it suitable for high-bit-depth retouching, printing, publishing, and interchange with applications that do not decode NEF files.

A TIFF is usually substantially larger than a JPEG and can be larger than the source NEF. Use TIFF for a working or delivery file when image quality and editability matter; use JPEG instead only when a recipient requires a smaller, ready-to-view file.

Convert an NEF file to TIFF

You can convert a .nef file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the file, choose TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .tif file. Use desktop RAW software instead when you need control over Nikon-specific rendering, exposure, white balance, noise reduction, crop, or color management.

Nikon NX Studio is a suitable desktop choice for Nikon files because it supports Nikon camera metadata and Picture Control rendering.

1. Open the NEF in Nikon NX Studio and make required RAW adjustments.
2. Select File → Export.
3. Choose TIFF, set the destination folder, and retain the original pixel dimensions unless specific dimensions are required.
4. Select 16-bit TIFF for further editing; use 8-bit TIFF only if the receiving software, printer, or service requires it.
5. Choose the required output color space and export the file.

In Adobe Lightroom Classic, select the image and use File → Export; choose TIFF, set bit depth and color space, then export. In Adobe Camera Raw, open the NEF, make adjustments, and use Save Image to select TIFF. darktable and RawTherapee provide equivalent TIFF options in their export panels.

Quality and compatibility settings

Keep the original NEF. TIFF conversion is not reversible: the exported file does not retain the original sensor data or the same latitude for white-balance changes and highlight recovery.

Use 16-bit TIFF for Photoshop, Affinity Photo, compositing, substantial tonal corrections, or color grading. It retains more tonal precision than 8-bit output and reduces the risk of banding after further edits, but requires more storage. Many older applications and upload portals accept only 8-bit TIFF.

Embed an ICC profile in the TIFF. sRGB provides the broadest compatibility; Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB should be used only when the recipient’s color-managed workflow supports the selected profile.

ZIP, LZW, and PackBits TIFF compression are lossless. JPEG compression inside a TIFF is lossy and is unsuitable for an editable master. If a recipient cannot open a compressed TIFF, export an uncompressed TIFF in the requested bit depth.

Online conversion produces a rendered TIFF and may offer fewer RAW-development controls than NX Studio or another dedicated RAW processor. Check the output for expected crop, orientation, colors, and pixel dimensions before sending it to a client, lab, or production system.
