Free online ARW to TIFF converter

Print shops, editing applications, and archive systems may require TIFF rather than Sony’s camera-native ARW format. The conversion renders the raw capture into a standard image file with chosen exposure, color, and detail settings; it does not retain the ARW’s full raw flexibility.

What the ARW format is

ARW is Sony’s proprietary raw format, used by many Alpha and Cyber-shot cameras. An ARW file contains mostly unprocessed sensor measurements along with camera metadata and, in some cases, a preview image. Raw processors such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, Sony Imaging Edge Desktop, darktable, and RawTherapee can adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, noise reduction, and lens corrections before rendering the image.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster format widely used for professional editing, scanning, printing, and image interchange. It supports 8-bit and 16-bit channels, embedded color profiles, and lossless LZW or ZIP compression. Some applications also store layers in TIFF, but layer support is not universal.

A 16-bit TIFF preserves more tonal and editing information during post-processing than an 8-bit output. TIFF files are normally much larger than JPEG files, but LZW and ZIP compression reduce size without discarding pixel data. JPEG compression inside a TIFF remains lossy and may not be accepted by every print or archive workflow.

How to convert ARW to TIFF

Using Adobe Lightroom

1. Import the .ARW file into Lightroom and open it in the Develop module.
2. Set exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, noise reduction, sharpening, lens corrections, and cropping as required.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. In File Settings, set Image Format to TIFF and choose 16-bit or 8-bit output.
5. Select a color space. Use sRGB for general compatibility, or Adobe RGB or another wider working space when the destination workflow supports it.
6. Choose LZW or ZIP compression when lossless compression is appropriate, then select Export.

Using free desktop raw processors

In darktable, import the ARW, make adjustments in the darkroom, then open the lighttable → export panel. Set the format to TIFF, choose 16-bit output, select the required color profile, and use LZW or ZIP compression.

In RawTherapee, open the ARW and process it, choose TIFF in the save controls, select 16 bits per channel and the intended color profile, then add the image to the processing queue. These applications can also batch-export multiple files.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Keep the original ARW files. A TIFF contains the rendered pixels and may preserve an embedded profile and application-specific data, but it does not make exposure, white balance, camera profiles, or highlight recovery independently editable in the same way as the raw file.

Use 16-bit TIFF for further editing, compositing, or printing, especially when the source is a 12-bit or 14-bit raw capture. Use 8-bit TIFF only when the receiving software requires it or the image is already final.

Embed the color profile expected by the destination. sRGB is the safest choice for general viewing and older software; Adobe RGB or a wider profile can retain more working-gamut color when the complete workflow supports it. Confirm that the receiving program accepts 16-bit TIFF, the selected compression, and the chosen profile before converting a large batch.
