A photo editor, catalog, or archive may require DNG instead of Sony's ARW, or DNG may reduce storage and standardize raw files across applications. Converting creates another raw file; it does not produce a JPEG or TIFF.
What the ARW format is
ARW is Sony's camera raw format, used by many Alpha interchangeable-lens cameras and some Cyber-shot models. It contains largely unprocessed sensor data together with exposure, lens, camera, and proprietary metadata, allowing compatible raw processors to adjust white balance, exposure, highlights, and noise reduction after capture.
ARW support depends on the camera model and the raw-decoder version in the application. Sony Imaging Edge, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Capture One, and other photography applications can open many ARW variants, but a recent camera may require a current software release.
What the DNG format is
DNG, or Digital Negative, is Adobe's documented raw-image format. It stores raw image data and metadata in a published structure supported by Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Camera Raw, Bridge, and many third-party applications.
DNG can simplify cross-application cataloging and metadata handling. Its lossless compression may produce a smaller file than the source ARW, although the result depends on the camera's original compression and the converter. DNG remains a raw file, so the image is still editable with raw controls rather than being rendered permanently like a JPEG.
How to convert ARW files
Adobe DNG Converter
Adobe DNG Converter is the most suitable general-purpose desktop option: it is free, supports batches, and does not require a Lightroom or Photoshop subscription. Install the current release from Adobe so that its decoder recognizes the camera model.
- Copy the ARW files to a local drive and retain the originals as a backup.
- Open Adobe DNG Converter and choose the folder containing the ARW files as the source.
- Choose an output folder, or configure the converter to place DNG files beside the source files.
- Open the conversion preferences and select a DNG compatibility level that supports the oldest Lightroom or Camera Raw version that must open the files. A newer setting may not open in older Adobe software.
- Use lossless compression for editing masters and archives. Leave Use Lossy Compression disabled unless smaller files are more important than retaining all raw data.
- Enable Embed Original Raw File only when the DNG must contain a copy of the ARW. This can increase the DNG substantially and does not replace an independent backup.
- Start the batch conversion. Open several results in the intended editor and check the image, orientation, metadata, thumbnails, and raw adjustment controls before removing any ARW files.
Lightroom classic and camera raw
In Lightroom Classic, import the ARW files, select the photographs, and choose Library → Convert Photo(s) to DNG. Set compatibility, preview, and compression options, then confirm. Lightroom normally leaves the ARW originals in place until you remove them separately.
In Adobe Camera Raw, open an ARW, choose Save Image, select DNG as the format, and set the compatibility and compression options. For a large batch, Adobe DNG Converter avoids opening images individually.
Online conversion
CloudConvert and Zamzar are recognizable browser-based services that may offer ARW-to-DNG conversion when desktop installation is unavailable. Upload copies rather than originals, confirm that the output format is DNG rather than JPEG, and inspect downloaded files in the target application. Camera-specific support can change, and raw photographs may contain private location or client information; do not upload them unless the service's retention, deletion, and privacy terms are acceptable.
Quality and compatibility limits
A lossless DNG conversion does not apply JPEG-style recompression, but it is not guaranteed to preserve every Sony-specific feature. Maker notes, camera profiles, compressed-raw behavior, Pixel Shift data, proprietary processing instructions, and some metadata may be translated, altered, or discarded.
Keep the original ARW files for irreplaceable, commercial, or legally significant photographs. DNG may be smaller, similar in size, or larger than ARW; embedding the original raw file usually makes it larger. Preserve any XMP sidecar files or application-specific adjustments that are not included by the converter.
DNG is not supported by every Sony utility, camera-specific application, or older raw processor. Test converted files in the exact editor, catalog, export workflow, and backup system that will use them. Keep both source and converted files until the results have been checked and included in a verified backup.
