Free online ARW to PNG converter

Sony camera files may need conversion when a viewer, document editor, or publishing application accepts PNG but not RAW images. Converting produces a broadly compatible rendered image for sharing or editing, while the original ARW remains available for future RAW adjustments.

What the ARW format is

.ARW is Sony's RAW format, produced by many Alpha, Cyber-shot, and professional cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data rather than a finished bitmap, together with metadata such as exposure, lens, ISO, and white balance. Photographers use ARW files because RAW software can adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, noise reduction, and color before rendering the final image.

Support depends on the camera model and the software's RAW decoder. Sony Imaging Edge Desktop, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Capture One, DxO PhotoLab, RawTherapee, and darktable can open many ARW variants; basic viewers and office applications may not.

What the PNG format is

.PNG is a raster format that uses lossless compression on the rendered pixel image. It supports 8-bit and, in compatible applications, 16-bit color channels, plus an optional alpha-transparency channel. PNG suits screenshots, diagrams, logos, web graphics, and images requiring clean edges, but it is usually larger than JPEG for photographs.

ARW-to-PNG conversion renders the sensor data into pixels. The PNG does not retain the original RAW development controls, so it cannot provide the same exposure, white-balance, or highlight-recovery flexibility. A normal camera photograph does not acquire transparency merely by being saved as PNG; transparency requires masking or background removal.

How to convert ARW to PNG

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the ARW-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .ARW file, select PNG as the target format, and start the conversion.
3. Download the resulting PNG and check its dimensions, color, and metadata in the application that will use it.

This option requires no software installation and is free to use. Do not upload private, confidential, or commercially sensitive photographs unless the service's current privacy and file-retention terms are acceptable; desktop conversion keeps the source file on your computer.

Using Adobe Lightroom

1. Import the ARW file with File → Import Photos and Video.
2. Apply RAW adjustments such as exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, and noise reduction.
3. Select the photo and open File → Export.
4. Set Image Format to PNG, choose the export color space and pixel dimensions, then select Export.

Use sRGB for general sharing, web use, and applications with unknown color-management support. Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB can retain a wider working gamut only when the receiving software is color-managed.

Using RawTherapee

1. Open RawTherapee, add the folder containing the ARW file in the file browser, and open the image in the editor.
2. Set the desired exposure, white balance, color, detail, and noise-reduction adjustments.
3. Choose PNG in the save or output options, select the bit depth and output color profile, then save the rendered image.

RawTherapee is free and also supports batch processing. Other RAW editors, including darktable and Capture One, use the same general workflow: open the ARW, develop it, and export a rendered PNG.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Choose 16-bit PNG when the image will undergo further tonal or color editing and the receiving software supports it; choose 8-bit PNG for ordinary viewing, web graphics, and applications limited to 8-bit color. Higher bit depth and large camera dimensions increase file size.

Keep the original ARW and, when possible, the editor's adjustment settings. PNG preserves the exported pixels without JPEG-style compression loss, but it does not preserve the editable RAW processing state. If the destination accepts JPEG and the image is a photograph rather than a graphic, JPEG may produce a substantially smaller file; use PNG when lossless pixels, transparency, or repeated editing is required.
