Free online JP2 to TIFF converter

A scanner, GIS, OCR, or publishing application may require TIFF when it cannot open a JPEG 2000 image. Converting also makes the image easier to edit, archive, or share with software that has limited JP2 support.

What the JPEG 2000 format is

JP2 is the JPEG 2000 file format, normally identified by the .jp2 extension. JPEG 2000 codestreams may also use .j2k, while the related JPX format commonly uses .jpf or .jpx. JPEG 2000 supports lossy and lossless compression, high bit depths, alpha channels, embedded color profiles, tiling, and progressive image data.

JP2 files are used in high-resolution scanning, archival digitization, GIS and mapping, medical and scientific imaging, and digital-asset repositories. Support depends on the application; specialist imaging and scanning software and applications built with OpenJPEG or Kakadu are more likely to handle JP2 than general-purpose office software.

What TIFF is

TIFF is a tagged raster-image format used by scanners, image editors, OCR systems, publishing applications, printers, and archival workflows. It can store grayscale, RGB, CMYK, and some other channel configurations; high bit depths, alpha channels, metadata, and multi-page image data are also supported, although individual applications may support only a subset.

TIFF usually offers broader compatibility and easier editing than JP2, at the cost of larger files. LZW and ZIP TIFF compression are lossless; uncompressed TIFF is larger but can avoid compatibility problems with older software. TIFF does not restore detail already discarded when the source JP2 used lossy compression.

How to convert a file

Use 101convert.com when you need a conversion without installing software: open the site, select the JP2 file, choose TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Do not upload confidential, medical, copyrighted, or restricted images to a web-based service unless its handling and retention policies meet your requirements.

For a local batch workflow, ImageMagick is suitable when the installed build includes JPEG 2000 support through an OpenJPEG delegate:

1. Install ImageMagick from your operating system's package source.
2. Test the input with magick identify input.jp2. An error about a missing JP2 coder or delegate means that the build lacks JPEG 2000 support.
3. Create a TIFF with lossless compression: magick input.jp2 -compress LZW output.tif. Use -compress ZIP if the destination application supports ZIP-compressed TIFF.
4. For maximum compatibility with software that supports only basic TIFF compression, use magick input.jp2 -compress None output.tif.
5. Check the result with magick identify -verbose output.tif, especially its dimensions, channel depth, color profile, and file size.

To inspect the image before exporting, open it in a compatible editor such as GIMP and use File → Export As; choose a filename ending in .tif or .tiff, then select LZW, ZIP, or no compression in the TIFF options. JP2 support in GIMP and other editors depends on the installed build and its JPEG 2000 plug-in. Photoshop support also varies by version, so verify that it opens the source before choosing File → Save As or File → Save a Copy and selecting TIFF.

Quality and compatibility limits

Use lossless TIFF compression to avoid adding another generation of image loss. This changes how the decoded pixels are stored; it cannot improve a lossy JP2 or recover information removed during its original encoding.

Preserve the source bit depth and embedded ICC profile for color-critical printing, scientific measurement, and archival work. Do not force sRGB unless the destination workflow requires it, because converting the color space can change color values and appearance. Confirm that the target application supports the source's channel layout, alpha channel, and bit depth.

A single JP2 normally produces a single-page TIFF. Multi-resolution JPEG 2000 structures, specialized JPEG 2000 metadata, and some annotations may not transfer to TIFF, so inspect the output and retain the original file. Extremely large images can exceed the approximately 4 GB limit of classic TIFF; use BigTIFF only when both the conversion software and destination application support it.
