What the CR3 format is
CR3 is Canon’s raw image format, introduced with many newer Canon cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data, usually with exposure, white-balance, lens, and camera metadata; some CR3 files use Canon’s compressed C-RAW variant.
CR3 files are created by Canon mirrorless and DSLR cameras and commonly appear on memory cards, camera-import folders, and photographic archives. They require raw-processing software such as Canon Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, or compatible versions of darktable. Operating-system preview support and older image editors may be limited.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF is a flexible raster-image format used for print production, scanning, publishing, scientific imaging, and long-term image exchange. It supports RGB, CMYK, grayscale, alpha channels, metadata, and typically 8-bit or 16-bit channels.
TIFF is suitable when an application needs a rendered image rather than camera sensor data. Lossless LZW or ZIP compression reduces file size without changing pixels, while uncompressed TIFF files are larger. TIFF generally preserves more editing information than JPEG, but it does not preserve the original raw data or the full range of adjustments available from a CR3 file.
How to convert CR3 to TIFF
Using Canon Digital Photo Professional
- Install and open Canon Digital Photo Professional, then browse to the folder containing the CR3 files.
- Adjust exposure, white balance, picture style, noise reduction, and lens corrections before export.
- Select the image or images and choose File → Convert and save.
- Set the file type to TIFF. Choose 16-bit for extensive editing or tonal-critical work; choose 8-bit when the destination only supports 8-bit images.
- Select a destination folder and start the conversion. Keep the original CR3 files as the editable camera originals.
Using Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw
In Lightroom, select the photographs and choose File → Export. Under File Settings, set Image Format → TIFF, choose 16-bit or 8-bit, select a color space such as Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB for an editing workflow, and choose ZIP or no compression as required by the destination. Click Export.
In Adobe Camera Raw, open the CR3 file, apply adjustments, and use Open Image to send it to Photoshop. Save the rendered image with File → Save As or File → Save a Copy, select TIFF, and choose the required bit depth and compression options.
Using 101convert online
You can convert a CR3 file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the file, select TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Online conversion is convenient for ordinary photographs, but raw-processing controls, color-profile choices, maximum file size, and privacy policies may differ from desktop applications; use locally installed software for confidential images or precise photographic adjustments.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- A CR3-to-TIFF conversion renders the raw sensor data into pixels. It cannot produce a TIFF that remains raw-editable in the same way as the original CR3.
- Use 16-bit TIFF when making substantial exposure, shadow, highlight, or color corrections. An 8-bit TIFF is usually sufficient for viewing, web preparation, and workflows that reject 16-bit input.
- Choose the output color space according to the next application. ProPhoto RGB retains a wide editing gamut, Adobe RGB suits many print workflows, and sRGB offers the broadest general compatibility.
- TIFF files can be several times larger than JPEG files and substantially larger than the corresponding CR3. LZW and ZIP compression are lossless; JPEG compression embedded in TIFF is lossy and should be avoided for archival masters.
- Some viewers display TIFF metadata inconsistently, and some applications do not support layered, tiled, CMYK, or 16-bit TIFF variants. For maximum compatibility, use a standard RGB TIFF with widely supported compression.
