The best tools for this are typically TeX Live or MiKTeX for compilation, and ImageMagick, Ghostscript, or pdftoppm for image conversion.

Method 1: TeX to PDF, then PDF to TIFF

1. Compile the TeX source with pdflatex, xelatex, or lualatex. For example: pdflatex document.tex
2. Confirm that the PDF looks correct, since the TIFF output will reflect the rendered pages exactly.
3. Convert the PDF to TIFF. With ImageMagick, a common command is magick -density 300 document.pdf document.tიფ or, more typically, magick -density 300 document.pdf document.tiff.
4. If you need one TIFF per page, use a page-aware tool such as pdftoppm -tiff -r 300 document.pdf page, which creates separate image files for each page.

Method 2: Direct rendering from TeX tools

1. Compile the TeX file to DVI if your workflow uses classic TeX tools, for example with latex document.tex.
2. Convert DVI to an image-friendly intermediate format or PDF, then export to TIFF.
3. This approach is useful for legacy documents, but PDF-based workflows are usually simpler and more compatible.

Using desktop software

If you prefer a graphical workflow, open the TeX document in a TeX editor such as TeXworks, TeXstudio, or Overleaf for compilation, then export or print the rendered output to PDF and convert that PDF to TIFF with an image tool. In many cases, the simplest path is to compile the document first, then use File → Export or File → Print to create a PDF, followed by TIFF conversion in an image editor or batch tool.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

Resolution matters: TIFF is a raster format, so the quality of the result depends heavily on the rendering resolution. For text and equations, 300 dpi is a common minimum, while 600 dpi may be better for archival or print use.

Vector to raster conversion is irreversible: once TeX is rendered to TIFF, text and formulas become pixels. You lose the ability to edit the document as structured TeX, and scaling up may reduce sharpness.

Multi-page handling: TIFF can store multiple pages, but not every tool writes multi-page TIFFs consistently. Some workflows create one TIFF per page instead. If you need a single file, verify that your converter supports multi-page TIFF.

Fonts and packages: if the TeX source uses custom fonts, packages, or external graphics, make sure the compilation step succeeds first. Missing fonts or unresolved references can affect the final TIFF output.

Color and compression: TIFF supports several compression methods. For documents with text and line art, lossless compression is usually preferred to preserve clarity.
