Epson camera raw files often need conversion before they can be opened in standard photo editors, catalogued by DAM software, or sent to a print workflow. TIFF preserves more editing data than JPEG and is commonly accepted by scanning, publishing, and archival applications.

What the ERF format is

ERF usually means Epson Raw Format, a camera raw format used by some Epson digital cameras. It stores sensor data with camera metadata rather than a finished RGB image, so ordinary image viewers may not open it directly. ERF files are typically encountered when transferring photographs from an older Epson camera or recovering images from an archived camera card.

Raw processors must demosaic the sensor data, apply white balance, interpret the camera profile, and produce a viewable image. An ERF file is therefore not converted by simply changing its filename extension to .tiff.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a tagged raster-image format used for print production, scanning, page-layout systems, scientific imaging, and lossless image interchange. It supports high bit depths, embedded color profiles, multiple channels, and lossless LZW or ZIP compression.

TIFF is useful when the image will undergo additional editing or archiving because it avoids the generational losses of JPEG. It normally produces much larger files, and some applications do not support every TIFF variant, especially multi-page files, unusual channel layouts, or floating-point data.

How to actually convert ERF to TIFF

Using 101convert online

  1. Open the ERF-to-TIFF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .erf file and select TIFF as the output format.
  3. Choose a 16-bit output if the converter offers a bit-depth setting; otherwise use its default TIFF option.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .tif or .tiff file.

This option requires no installed software and is free on the 101convert.com website. Do not upload photographs containing sensitive or confidential information unless the service's file-handling terms are acceptable for that use.

Using a desktop raw processor

RawTherapee and darktable can open many Epson ERF files and provide control over exposure, white balance, demosaicing, sharpening, noise reduction, and color management.

  1. Install a current version of RawTherapee or darktable and open the ERF file.
  2. Adjust exposure and white balance while viewing the image at 100% magnification. Apply lens corrections and noise reduction only if needed.
  3. Set the working color profile to a standard space such as sRGB for general sharing, or Adobe RGB if the downstream workflow requires it.
  4. Export through RawTherapee → Save or the equivalent export control in darktable.
  5. Select TIFF, preferably 16-bit integer, and use LZW or ZIP compression. Save the output with a new filename such as photo_001.tif.

Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, and other applications with Epson raw support can perform the same workflow through their export dialogs. Choose Export → Image Format: TIFF, then set the bit depth, color space, and compression.

Using dcraw from a command line

If the installed dcraw build supports the camera model, it can create a TIFF directly:

dcraw -T -6 -W photo.erf

-T requests TIFF output, -6 requests 16-bit output, and -W uses the camera white balance. Check the local version's help with dcraw -h; dcraw support for newer or uncommon ERF cameras may be incomplete. A modern raw processor is preferable when the file opens incorrectly or color needs careful control.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Raw conversion is interpretive: two applications can produce different brightness, color, detail, and noise because they use different camera profiles and demosaicing algorithms. Keep the original ERF file and its metadata, and treat the TIFF as a rendered working copy rather than a replacement.

Use 16-bit TIFF when further tonal adjustments are expected; 8-bit TIFF is adequate for basic delivery but has less editing headroom. Embed an ICC profile, such as sRGB or Adobe RGB, so other applications interpret the colors consistently. Confirm that the output opens in the target application because some programs accept only baseline, single-image TIFF files.

If the file is not an Epson camera raw image—for example, if ERF refers to a different application's resource or archive format—raw-photo converters will not decode it. Identify the creating program before conversion.
