FH7 is a Macromedia FreeHand 7 drawing file format. It stores vector artwork such as logos, illustrations, page layouts, and text objects created in FreeHand. Designers and print-production users historically used FH7 files for editable artwork, especially before Adobe Illustrator became dominant. Because it is a vector format, FH7 content can scale without losing quality, but it is not widely supported by modern software.

Target format

TIFF is a widely supported raster image format used in publishing, scanning, archiving, and professional image workflows. It is valued for high quality, broad compatibility, support for lossless compression, and optional features such as multiple pages and transparency in some workflows. TIFF is a good choice when you need a stable image file for printing, archiving, or importing into software that does not support FreeHand files.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable approach is to open the FH7 file in software that can still read FreeHand documents, then export or rasterize it to TIFF.

1. Use compatible desktop software. The best-known option is Adobe Illustrator if it can open your FH7 file, or another application with FreeHand import support. In some cases, older versions of Macromedia FreeHand or conversion-capable graphics tools may be needed because FH7 is an older format.
2. Open the FH7 file. Launch the program and choose File → Open, then select the .fh7 file.
3. Check the artwork. Verify that fonts, linked images, and special effects imported correctly. If anything is missing, fix it before exporting.
4. Export to TIFF. Use File → Export or File → Save As, then choose TIFF as the output format. If the software offers export options, set the desired resolution, color mode, and compression.
5. Choose raster settings. Because TIFF is raster-based, select an appropriate resolution such as 300 dpi for print or a lower value for screen use. Higher resolution preserves more detail but creates larger files.
6. Save the file. Confirm the output filename, for example design.tიფ, and complete the export.

Notes on quality and limitations

FH7 to TIFF is a vector-to-raster conversion, so the result will no longer be editable as vector artwork. Text, lines, and shapes are flattened into pixels at the chosen resolution. For best quality, export at a sufficiently high DPI before converting.

Compatibility can be limited because FH7 is obsolete and many modern applications cannot open it directly. If the file contains unsupported fonts, effects, or linked assets, the exported TIFF may differ from the original artwork. Also, TIFF files can become very large, especially at print-quality resolutions or with uncompressed output.
