5. Open the resulting .tiff file in an image viewer or editor to verify the result.

Notes on quality and limitations

HDR to TIFF is not always a simple one-to-one conversion. HDR files often contain a much larger brightness range than standard TIFF workflows can display in a typical viewer. If the TIFF is saved as 8-bit, much of the original dynamic range will be lost. For best results, export to a 16-bit or 32-bit TIFF when your software supports it.

Another important limitation is that some HDR files are intended as lighting data rather than normal photographs. In those cases, the converted TIFF may look different from the original unless tone mapping is applied. Also, not every program reads HDR files the same way, so color appearance can vary slightly between applications.

For archival or editing purposes, TIFF is a strong choice because it is widely supported and can preserve more detail than many common image formats. However, if the source HDR is meant for rendering or environment lighting, keep the original .hdr file as well, since TIFF may not preserve the exact same HDR workflow semantics.
