RAW files, on the other hand, are unprocessed image files captured directly from a camera's sensor. They contain minimally processed data, preserving all the information needed for high-quality post-processing. RAW files are specific to camera manufacturers (such as .CR2 for Canon, .NEF for Nikon, .ARW for Sony), but the term "RAW" generally refers to any such uncompressed image format.

Why convert hdr to raw?

Converting an HDR image to a RAW format is not a typical workflow, as RAW files are meant to be the original capture from a camera sensor. However, you might want to convert HDR to a RAW-like format (such as DNG) for further editing in software that primarily supports RAW files, or to integrate HDR images into a RAW-based workflow.

How to convert hdr to raw

Direct conversion from HDR to proprietary RAW formats (like .CR2 or .NEF) is not possible, as these formats require specific camera metadata. However, you can convert HDR images to the DNG (Digital Negative) format, which is an open RAW format supported by Adobe and many other applications.

Best software for hdr to raw (DNG) conversion

• Adobe Photoshop: Open your HDR file, then use File → Save As and select DNG if available, or export to TIFF and then convert to DNG using Adobe DNG Converter.
• Adobe DNG Converter: Convert TIFF files (exported from HDR) to DNG format. First, open your HDR in Photoshop or another editor, export as 16-bit TIFF, then use DNG Converter.
• HDRsoft Photomatix: Export HDR images as 16-bit TIFF, then convert to DNG using Adobe DNG Converter.
• RawTherapee: Open the exported TIFF and save as DNG if supported.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Open your HDR file in Adobe Photoshop or Photomatix.
2. Export the image as a 16-bit TIFF using File → Save As → TIFF.
3. Open Adobe DNG Converter and select the exported TIFF file.
4. Convert the TIFF to DNG (RAW) format.

Important notes

• Converted DNG files from HDR images will not contain original camera sensor data, but will be compatible with RAW editing workflows.
• Always keep your original HDR files for reference and backup.
