Free online DWFX to TIFF converter

TIFF is required by many scanning, publishing, archival, and image-processing workflows that cannot open Autodesk’s DWFX package. Converting the drawing to TIFF also produces a fixed raster image for sharing or printing, but removes DWFX-specific viewing features.

What the DWFX format is

DWFX is Autodesk’s Design Web Format based on the XML Paper Specification (XPS). It packages published 2D drawings, sheet sets, annotations, fonts, and sometimes 3D design data for viewing without the authoring CAD application.

AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, and other Autodesk products can publish DWFX files. Autodesk Design Review and compatible XPS viewers are typical programs encountered when opening them. DWFX is intended for controlled viewing and measurement, not general-purpose image editing.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster graphics format used in scanning, desktop publishing, GIS, print production, and long-term document storage. It supports high bit depths, grayscale and RGB color, optional CMYK, multipage documents, and lossless compression such as LZW or Deflate.

TIFF is suitable when a receiving application expects an image rather than a CAD or document container. It preserves rendered linework at a selected resolution and is widely supported by image editors and publishing systems, but it does not retain DWFX layers, measurements, hyperlinks, or interactive 3D viewing.

How to actually convert DWFX to TIFF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the DWFX-to-TIFF converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Upload the .dwfx file and select TIFF as the output format.
3. Choose the page or sheet range, if available, and set the output resolution. Use 300 dpi for ordinary document use and 600 dpi for fine CAD linework or print production.
4. Start the conversion and download the generated TIFF file or files.

Using Autodesk Design Review and a desktop TIFF printer

1. Install Autodesk Design Review and open the DWFX file.
2. Select File → Print and choose a TIFF-capable printer driver installed on Windows.
3. Set the original sheet size, orientation, color mode, and raster resolution in the printer properties. Select 300 or 600 dpi rather than allowing the driver to scale the page automatically.
4. Print each sheet to TIFF. Depending on the driver, a multipage set may be saved as separate TIFF files or as one multipage TIFF.

Design Review generally renders and prints the view rather than exporting DWFX objects as editable image elements. If no TIFF printer is installed, use the online converter or first print to a lossless intermediate format supported by the available desktop software, then save that rendered page as TIFF.

Quality and compatibility limits

DWFX stores vector geometry, while TIFF stores pixels. Increasing TIFF resolution cannot restore CAD editability; it only reduces visible stair-stepping and preserves thinner lines during rasterization.

Check the output at 100% and confirm the paper size, scale, line weights, clipping, text, and annotations. Multi-sheet DWFX files may produce one TIFF per sheet, and not every TIFF reader supports multipage files.

Use LZW or Deflate compression for lossless output. Avoid JPEG-compressed TIFF when small text, dimensions, or thin linework must remain sharp. Embedded fonts, unsupported annotations, 3D content, layers, and interactive links may be flattened, omitted, or represented only as their visible rendered appearance.
