How to convert psd to tiff file

Print shops, scanners, publishing systems, and archival repositories often require TIFF rather than Photoshop’s native PSD format. Converting provides a widely supported raster file for sharing, placement, printing, or storage, but editable Photoshop features may be lost.

What the PSD format is

PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop’s native format for editable image documents. It can store raster data, layers, layer masks, adjustment layers, text, paths, transparency, embedded color profiles, and Photoshop-specific effects. Designers, photographers, illustrators, and production teams use PSD files when artwork may need further editing or compositing in Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or other compatible applications.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a tagged raster-image format used in commercial printing, publishing, scanning, photography, and image archiving. It supports RGB, CMYK, grayscale, and Lab images, alpha channels, embedded ICC profiles, and commonly 8- or 16-bit channels. LZW and ZIP compression are lossless, while JPEG compression reduces file size at the cost of image artifacts. TIFF is generally more widely supported than PSD by scanners, layout software, print services, and archival systems.

How to convert a PSD file to TIFF

With Adobe Photoshop

  1. Open the PSD with File → Open.
  2. Choose File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, depending on the Photoshop version.
  3. Choose TIFF as the format, or enter a filename ending in .tif or .tiff, then select Save.
  4. In the TIFF Options dialog, select LZW or ZIP for lossless compression. Select None only when a receiving system specifically requires an uncompressed file.
  5. Enable Save Layers only if the receiving application supports layered TIFF files. Disable it for a flatter file with broader compatibility.

Before saving, use Edit → Convert to Profile when the destination specifies an ICC color profile. Keep the original PSD because TIFF cannot reproduce every Photoshop layer type, adjustment, effect, or editing feature.

With 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the PSD, select TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Check the service’s file-size and privacy terms before uploading confidential or high-resolution artwork.

With desktop alternatives

GIMP can open many PSD files and export them through File → Export As, using a .tif or .tiff filename. PSD compatibility is not complete: unsupported Photoshop layers, effects, text features, and adjustment layers may be flattened or changed before export, so inspect the result against the original.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Flattening removes editability. The visible composite may remain intact, but layers, masks, adjustment layers, and text structure are no longer independently editable.
  • Layered TIFF is not universally readable. Some applications ignore Photoshop layer data and open only the flattened composite; layered files are also substantially larger.
  • Preserve the ICC profile when color must match between Photoshop, proofing software, and printing equipment. Confirm the required profile with the print provider.
  • Retain 16-bit data when the workflow supports it. It preserves more tonal information than 8-bit TIFF, but older applications and some print workflows accept only 8-bit files.
  • Transparency is not guaranteed at output. TIFF can contain alpha channels, but some layout and print applications ignore them. Use a flattened background when the destination requires an opaque image.
  • Avoid JPEG compression for text, line art, screenshots, or files that will be edited repeatedly; its loss can create visible block or edge artifacts.
  • Very large TIFF files can exceed the approximately 4 GB limit of classic TIFF and may require BigTIFF support, which is not available in every application.
