How to convert psd to dwg file

A CAD, surveying, or manufacturing application may require a DWG drawing instead of a layered Photoshop file. The conversion is usually needed for editing, measurement, plotting, or sharing CAD geometry, and normally requires tracing or vectorizing the image rather than renaming the extension.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native document format. Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo, and other image editors use it for raster layers, masks, transparency, adjustment layers, text, and limited vector shape or path data.

PSD files are used for photo composites, scanned plans, presentation graphics, render annotations, and layered design work. Pixel data does not automatically become CAD lines, arcs, dimensions, blocks, or editable text.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a CAD drawing format developed by Autodesk and supported by AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and other engineering applications. It stores entities such as lines, polylines, circles, arcs, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and model-space coordinates.

DWG is appropriate when geometry must be measured, edited, plotted to scale, or used in architectural, mechanical, civil, or surveying software. CAD entities can remain selectable and receive layers, colors, lineweights, and coordinates.

How to convert PSD to DWG

Raster workflow with AutoCAD

  1. Open the PSD in Photoshop and create a conversion copy. Hide shadows, textures, guides, labels, and decorative layers that should not become CAD geometry.
  2. For an image underlay, flatten the copy and export a lossless PNG or TIFF through File → Export → Export As. A Photoshop PDF can be created through File → Save a Copy → Photoshop PDF, but it may still contain raster content and does not guarantee editable vectors.
  3. In AutoCAD, create a drawing with the required units and coordinate system. Attach the image with IMAGEATTACH or the PDF with PDFATTACH.
  4. Set the insertion point and rotation, then calibrate the scale from a known dimension. Pixel dimensions are not real-world units.
  5. With AutoCAD Raster Design installed, use its raster-to-vector recognition tools for suitable straight lines, polylines, arcs, circles, and text. Otherwise, trace the underlay manually with commands such as PLINE, ARC, and CIRCLE.
  6. Clean the result by joining segments, removing duplicates, closing gaps, correcting curves, assigning layers, and checking dimensions against the source.
  7. Keep or detach the raster reference as required, then use File → Save As or SAVEAS to save the DWG version required by the receiving application.

Workflow for existing vector content

If the PSD contains usable Photoshop shape layers or paths rather than only pixels, export or recreate those paths in a vector editor such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape, save them as DXF, and open the DXF in a CAD application for cleanup and DWG saving. This preserves only supported paths; Photoshop layers, effects, masks, raster content, and most editing history are not transferred.

BricsCAD and DraftSight can attach the exported PNG, TIFF, or PDF for manual tracing. Inkscape is suitable for simple, high-contrast artwork but does not produce a finished, dimensionally reliable DWG without CAD cleanup.

Online conversion services

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar are reputable services, but direct PSD-to-DWG availability varies and some listed conversions produce an image-bearing drawing rather than vector geometry. If a service offers the pairing, upload only nonconfidential files, specify the required DWG version when available, and inspect the result in AutoCAD or another CAD application. For engineering, survey, or manufacturing data, local reconstruction gives better control over scale, layers, and geometry.

Quality and compatibility limits

A photograph, gradient, shadow, anti-aliased edge, or compressed scan has no single unambiguous CAD representation. Raster recognition can infer boundaries but cannot recover exact dimensions, design intent, hidden layers, original text objects, or missing geometry.

Use a clean scan at approximately 300–600 dpi for linework, remove compression artifacts, and include a known reference dimension. Retype text when recognition is inaccurate, and manually correct diagonal lines, curves, intersections, and small features.

A DWG containing only an attached PNG, TIFF, or PDF is a referenced-image drawing, not a fully vectorized conversion. Check the required DWG release before saving: newer files may not open in older CAD software, while saving to an older release can remove newer entity types or features.
