Convert ART to DWG

An old AOL ART image may need conversion when a CAD application such as AutoCAD requires editable drawing geometry instead of a viewable picture. Because ART stores raster pixels and DWG stores CAD entities, the practical workflow is to decode the image, trace it, and save the resulting vectors as DWG.

What the ART format is

In the Graphics context, ART usually refers to the proprietary AOL image format used by older AOL software and browsers. It is a compressed raster format: the file contains pixels, not CAD lines, arcs, dimensions, layers, blocks, or other drawing entities. ART files are most likely to occur in archived web graphics and older image collections.

Modern CAD programs generally do not open ART directly. Open the file with an ART-compatible image utility such as XnView MP, or test a current ImageMagick installation with magick identify input.art. Support varies by software version, so confirm that the file decodes correctly before converting it.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD. It can contain editable 2D geometry, 3D models, annotations, blocks, layers, dimensions, and other structured CAD data. AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and other compatible applications can use DWG for drafting and engineering documentation.

Attaching the ART image to a DWG does not convert it into linework. The image remains a raster reference; editable geometry must be traced or redrawn.

How to convert ART to DWG

AutoCAD Raster Design workflow

1. Open the ART file in XnView MP or another application that supports AOL ART.
2. Export it as PNG or lossless TIFF using File → Save as. PNG is suitable for most images; TIFF is useful for high-resolution monochrome material.
3. Open the exported image in AutoCAD with Raster Design installed. Attach it through the image-reference command, commonly Insert → Reference → Attach, depending on the AutoCAD release.
4. Set the insertion units and scale from a known dimension in the source. If the image has no known dimension, the resulting drawing has no reliable physical scale.
5. Use Raster Design raster-to-vector tools to trace appropriate lines, arcs, and polylines. Remove speckles, join broken segments, correct corners, and place entities on suitable layers.
6. Check the traced geometry against the image, verify critical dimensions manually, and save with File → Save as in the DWG version required by the recipient's CAD software.

Inkscape and a DXF-capable CAD program

1. Decode the ART file and save it as PNG or TIFF with XnView MP or a comparable converter.
2. Import the image into Inkscape and choose Path → Trace Bitmap. Adjust threshold, despeckling, and corner settings for the image's contrast and resolution.
3. Inspect the generated paths at high magnification. Delete the original raster image if it is not needed, and manually redraw text, thin lines, blurred edges, and overlapping features that traced inaccurately.
4. Export the paths as DXF using File → Save a Copy. Select the correct drawing units and a DXF version supported by the destination CAD program.
5. Open the DXF in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, or another compatible application. Correct scale, units, layers, polylines, and line types, then save the result as DWG.

Online conversion options

Convertio and CloudConvert can be useful for decoding ART to PNG or JPG, but available input formats change, so confirm that the service currently lists ART before uploading. These services generally do not create useful DWG geometry from a raster ART file. Do not upload confidential plans, scans, or proprietary images to a public conversion service.

Quality and compatibility limits

There is no lossless direct ART-to-DWG conversion: ART records pixels, while DWG records geometric entities. Automatic tracing can create thousands of short segments, duplicate lines, inaccurate curves, gaps, and unusable text. Architectural, mechanical, survey, and other dimension-sensitive drawings require manual cleanup and verification; a traced result must not be treated as dimensionally accurate merely because it opens in a CAD program.

Low source resolution and ART compression may already have blurred thin lines or removed detail. Saving the decoded image as PNG or TIFF preserves the available pixels but cannot restore lost information. Keep the raster image attached as a reference until the vector geometry, scale, units, and critical dimensions have been checked.
