A finished Photoshop composition may need to be delivered to an iPhone, iPad, or application that specifically accepts HEIC rather than an editable PSD. Conversion creates a flattened image for sharing or storage while leaving the original PSD available for later edits.

PSD and HEIC formats

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native document format. Designers and photographers use it to retain layers, masks, adjustment layers, editable text, smart objects, transparency, color profiles, and other project data.

HEIC is the common file extension for images stored in the HEIF container, usually encoded with HEVC/H.265. Apple devices commonly create HEIC photos when the camera's High Efficiency setting is enabled. HEIC can provide similar visual quality to JPEG at a smaller size, although the result depends on image content and encoder settings.

A HEIC file is intended as an image deliverable, not a Photoshop project. Converting a PSD renders its visible composite; layers, editable text, masks, smart objects, guides, and Photoshop history are not retained.

Convert a PSD to HEIC

1. Save the PSD first and keep it as the editable master file.

Preparing the Photoshop document

Some Photoshop versions and platforms can export HEIC directly through File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As, but availability varies by version and installed codec support. If HEIC is not listed, export a flattened TIFF or PNG and convert that file instead. On macOS, Preview can export a compatible TIFF or PNG through File → Export when HEIC appears in its Format menu.

Quality and compatibility limits

HEIC normally uses lossy compression. Use a high-quality setting for fine detail, gradients, line art, and small text, and avoid repeatedly re-saving a HEIC through lossy formats. A PNG may be smaller or visually safer for simple graphics with large flat-color areas; a TIFF is useful as a high-quality intermediate file.

HEIC can support transparency, but alpha-channel support is inconsistent among encoders, viewers, and receiving systems. Use PNG when transparent pixels must be preserved unless the target application has been tested with HEIC transparency.

Support is strongest in current Apple software. Some Windows installations need HEIF and HEVC extensions, and older applications, browsers, email systems, and content-management platforms may reject HEIC. Use JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF for web publishing unless the destination explicitly accepts HEIC.

Color-managed PSDs can change appearance after flattening or conversion, particularly when they use wide-gamut profiles. Compare the exported image with the Photoshop composite at 100% zoom; convert or embed an sRGB profile when the recipient's color-management support is unknown.
