Free online JPF to HEIC converter

A .jpf image may need conversion when an Apple-focused workflow, device, or storage system accepts HEIC but not JPEG 2000. HEIC can reduce the size of photographic images, but conversion may discard JPEG 2000 features that the HEIC encoder cannot represent.

What the JPF format is

.jpf is commonly an extension for a JPEG 2000 image. JPEG 2000 uses wavelet compression and can store either lossy or lossless image data; related files may use .jp2, .j2k, or .jpx extensions.

JPEG 2000 appears in scanning, publishing, GIS, scientific imaging, and archival systems. A JPF file can contain high-bit-depth data, transparency, an ICC color profile, or JPEG 2000 structures that are not retained by a basic still-image export.

Do not rename image.jpf to image.heic; changing the extension does not change its encoded image data. If a converter cannot open the file, verify that it is a JPEG 2000 image rather than unrelated proprietary data using the same extension.

What the HEIC format is

.heic is the common filename extension for a HEIF image container holding an HEVC/H.265-compressed image. It is the default photo format on many Apple devices and is supported by current versions of macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and some Windows applications.

HEIC can store metadata, color profiles, transparency, image sequences, and auxiliary images, although support depends on the encoder and viewing application. For a normal single-image conversion, the result is one HEIC still image, not a preservation of JPEG 2000 layers, codestream details, or application-specific metadata.

Convert the file

Use the converter on 101convert.com: upload the .jpf file, select HEIC as the output format, start conversion, then download the converted file. Open the HEIC file at full resolution before deleting the source, particularly when the JPF is an archival scan, map, technical drawing, or master image.

For local batch work, ImageMagick can convert the file if its installation includes a JPEG 2000 decoder and HEIF support through libheif:

magick input.jpf output.heic

To request a higher encoder quality setting, use:

magick input.jpf -quality 90 output.heic

Check available codecs with magick -list format. The output should list JPEG 2000 support, such as JP2, J2K, or JPX, and a writable HEIC or HEIF format. Codec availability varies by operating system and ImageMagick package.

XnView MP or XnConvert may also work when their installed codecs can read the specific JPF variant and write HEIC. Open the source, use File → Save As or the output-format settings, select HEIC, choose the quality setting, and save to a new file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Most HEIC exports use lossy HEVC compression. Converting a lossless JPEG 2000 image to ordinary HEIC therefore does not preserve a lossless master; retain the original JPF for archiving or further editing.

A quality value of 90 or higher can reduce visible artifacts, but quality scales are encoder-specific and larger values create larger files. Repeated conversion between lossy formats compounds compression artifacts.

Check colors, fine text, and grayscale gradients after conversion. JPEG 2000 files using CMYK, unusual bit depths, transparency, embedded ICC profiles, or multi-image content may be converted incorrectly or flattened; export from the creating application when exact rendering matters.

HEIC is less universally accepted than JPEG or PNG, especially in older Windows software, browsers, and upload forms. Create a JPEG or PNG copy for recipients or services that do not accept HEIC.
