How to convert jpg to heic file

Apple-focused photo libraries, device storage workflows, or upload portals may request .heic files instead of JPG. Converting creates a smaller-format copy in many cases, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by JPEG compression.

What JPG is

JPG, also written JPEG and commonly stored as .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster image format primarily used for photographs and continuous-tone images. Cameras, phones, web browsers, image editors, websites, printers, and email clients support it widely.

JPEG encoding removes image data to reduce file size. Saving an already-compressed JPG again with lossy settings can introduce additional artifacts, particularly around text, sharp edges, fine patterns, and smooth gradients.

What HEIC is

HEIC is the usual extension for an image stored in the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container. Apple camera photos commonly use HEIC with HEVC/H.265 compression when Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency is enabled.

HEIF can contain still images, image sequences, alpha transparency, depth information, and metadata. For photographic images, HEIC often produces a smaller file than JPG at similar perceived quality, but the result depends on the source image, dimensions, and selected quality setting.

Convert JPG to HEIC

Use the JPG-to-HEIC converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the JPG file, start the conversion, download the resulting .heic file, and keep the source JPG until the receiving app or device has opened the output correctly.

On macOS, Preview can export a JPG as HEIC: open the image, choose File → Export, select HEIC in the Format menu, choose the quality setting, and save. Preview adds the appropriate extension automatically.

For command-line or batch work, ImageMagick can write HEIC only when it was built with libheif and an available HEVC encoder. Test a single file before batch processing:

magick input.jpg -quality 85 output.heic

On a shell that supports this syntax, convert all lowercase .jpg files in the current folder with:

for f in *.jpg; do magick "$f" -quality 85 "${f%.jpg}.heic"; done

Quality and compatibility limits

JPG-to-HEIC conversion is another lossy encode. A quality value around 80–90 is a reasonable starting point when the file may be edited again, but inspect the output at full size before deleting the original. A HEIC result is not guaranteed to be smaller than its JPG source, especially if the original JPG is already heavily compressed or the HEIC quality is set high.

HEIC support remains less universal than JPG. Older operating systems, some Windows installations without HEIF/HEVC components, many web upload forms, printers, and some Android or browser-based applications may reject or fail to display .heic files. Use JPG when the recipient requires maximum compatibility.

Dimensions and visible orientation usually transfer, but metadata handling varies by converter. Verify EXIF capture dates, GPS coordinates, copyright fields, ICC color profiles, and orientation when they matter for cataloging, privacy, or color-managed printing.
