What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format used mainly for photographs and web images. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, and editors such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP commonly create or open it. Its compression produces relatively small files by discarding image data, so repeated editing and saving can reduce quality.

What the ODG format is

ODG, or OpenDocument Graphics, is the drawing format used natively by LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw. An ODG document can combine raster images with vector shapes, text, connectors, charts, and drawing pages. Its open XML-based package is more suitable than a flat JPG for arranging objects, adding labels or annotations, and preserving an editable drawing layout.

How to convert a JPG to ODG

LibreOffice Draw is the most dependable desktop option because it can open and save ODG directly.

1. Install and open LibreOffice, then start Draw.
2. Open the image with File → Open, or create a blank drawing and choose Insert → Image to place the JPG.
3. Adjust the image position and size. Use the Properties sidebar when exact dimensions or coordinates are required.
4. Choose File → Save As.
5. Select ODG - OpenDocument Drawing as the file type, enter a name such as image.odg, and select Save.
6. If LibreOffice displays a format confirmation, choose to use the OpenDocument format.

An inserted JPG is normally stored inside the ODG package. Keep the original JPG separately if it may be needed later; an ODG document is not a replacement for the source image.

Apache OpenOffice Draw provides a similar workflow: open or insert the JPG, then use File → Save As and select the OpenDocument Drawing format.

Online conversion

CloudConvert and Convertio may offer JPG-to-ODG conversion, although supported formats and limits can change. Upload the JPG, select ODG as the output, convert it, download the result, and open it in LibreOffice Draw to verify the page and image. Online services are appropriate for nonconfidential files; use desktop software for private images or when precise layout control matters. Some services produce only an ODG containing the original raster image, not editable drawing components.

Quality and compatibility limits

Putting a JPG in an ODG does not restore JPEG detail or vectorize the picture. The image remains raster and may look blurred when enlarged beyond its native pixel dimensions. JPEG artifacts also remain unchanged.

LibreOffice Draw generally offers the best ODG compatibility. Other office and graphics applications may change fonts, object positions, transparency, page settings, or unsupported drawing elements. Do not rename image.jpg to image.odg; changing the extension does not convert the file. For recipients who only need to view the result, export a separate PDF or image through File → Export and retain the ODG for editing.
