A digital-archive system, imaging application, or document workflow may require JPEG 2000 instead of standard JPEG. Converting the file creates a .jp2 version for that system, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by JPG compression.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written as JPEG, is a raster image format designed mainly for photographs. It uses lossy compression, discarding visual data to reduce file size; repeated editing and saving can add blocking, ringing, and other artifacts.

Digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, web browsers, photo editors, office software, and operating systems commonly create or export .jpg files. Standard JPG supports color and grayscale images but has no standard alpha channel for transparency.

What the JP2 format is

JPEG 2000 can produce better visual quality than JPG at some low bitrates, support higher bit depths, and preserve transparency or extensive metadata when the encoder and application support those features. Support is narrower than JPG: many basic viewers, browsers, and older applications do not open JP2 without a compatible codec.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Lossless JP2 prevents another lossy compression step, but it cannot reverse JPG artifacts or recreate discarded detail. A lossy JP2 can be smaller, but its quality depends on the encoder's bitrate or quality setting; inspect fine text, sharp edges, and repeated patterns at 100% magnification.

Keep the original JPG when it is the source record. After conversion, verify the color profile, EXIF fields, orientation, dimensions, and any transparency because metadata and channel handling depend on the converter and JPEG 2000 encoder. Use .jp2 for the standard JP2 file format; .jpx and .jpm are related JPEG 2000 formats with different features and compatibility.
