How to convert jpg to tiff file

Print, scanning, publishing, and archival systems may require TIFF when they reject JPEG or need lossless storage. Converting creates a TIFF copy for that workflow, but it cannot restore detail already removed from the JPEG.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a raster-image format designed for compact photographic files. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, and image editors commonly create or export .jpg files.

JPEG normally uses lossy compression: it discards image information to reduce file size. Strong compression or repeated JPEG saves can cause blocking, ringing, and blurred fine detail. JPEG stores a flattened image rather than editable layers, although files may retain metadata such as EXIF data, an ICC profile, or editing information depending on the software that saves them.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a flexible raster-image container used in commercial printing, desktop publishing, scanning, medical imaging, and image storage. It can store grayscale, RGB, and CMYK images, higher bit depths when supported by the source and application, embedded color profiles, resolution metadata, optional transparency, and multiple pages.

TIFF supports lossless compression methods such as LZW and ZIP, as well as uncompressed storage. These options avoid another lossy compression cycle, but saving a JPEG as a TIFF does not recover pixels lost during the original JPEG encoding. TIFF files are usually much larger than JPEG files, and some applications support only a limited subset of TIFF features.

Convert with 101convert.com

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software:

  1. Upload the JPG file.
  2. Select TIFF as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .tif or .tiff file.

Do not upload confidential, personal, or regulated images to an online service unless its privacy and retention policies meet your requirements.

Convert with desktop software

In GIMP, open the image with File → Open, select File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .tif, choose TIFF options, and confirm the export. Select LZW or ZIP compression when the destination accepts it.

In Photoshop, open the JPG and use File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, select TIFF, then choose LZW, ZIP, or uncompressed storage in the TIFF options. Menu names vary by Photoshop version.

Convert from the command line

ImageMagick can convert individual files and automate batches. This command writes a TIFF with LZW compression:

magick input.jpg -compress LZW output.tif

Use ZIP compression instead with:

magick input.jpg -compress Zip output.tif

For multiple files, use a script that assigns each source a unique .tif name and preserves the original JPGs. Check the output after conversion because color profiles, metadata, and TIFF options can vary between software versions.

Quality and compatibility limits

LZW or ZIP produces a smaller TIFF without additional image loss; uncompressed TIFF is appropriate only when a receiving system requires it. Converting an 8-bit JPEG to a 16-bit TIFF changes the file’s declared storage depth, not the amount of genuine image detail.

Changing resolution metadata, such as from 72 to 300 DPI, changes the specified print size but does not add pixels or sharpen the image. For printing or archiving, confirm the required color space, embedded ICC profile, bit depth, maximum dimensions, compression type, and single-page or multipage structure. A TIFF that uses unsupported compression, transparency, tiles, or high bit depth may fail in older devices and applications.
