What the JPF format is

JPF is an extension used for JPEG 2000 image files, commonly associated with the JP2/JPEG 2000 codec family. It can store lossy or lossless photographs, scans, illustrations, high-bit-depth images, and transparency. Adobe Photoshop and professional imaging, scanning, and archival systems can open or create JPF files, while many basic Windows viewers cannot.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a Windows bitmap format that stores raster pixels, commonly without compression. It is supported by Windows utilities, legacy applications, simple graphics software, and some scanner, printing, and hardware workflows. Standard BMP exports avoid additional JPEG-style lossy compression and are easy for compatible programs to decode, but their files are often much larger than JPF files. A 24-bit BMP stores color without transparency; a 32-bit BMP can store an alpha channel when the receiving application supports it.

How to convert JPF files to BMP

Quality and compatibility considerations

• Conversion cannot restore detail already discarded by a lossy JPF. A lossless JPF normally retains its decoded pixel values, but the BMP export can change color depth, transparency handling, or metadata.
• The image dimensions usually remain unchanged, but JPF-specific metadata, layers, embedded profiles, and advanced JPEG 2000 features may not survive BMP export.
• Choose 24-bit BMP for the widest compatibility. Choose 32-bit BMP only when transparency is needed and the destination program supports alpha-channel BMP files.
• Check the exported dimensions, orientation, colors, profile handling, and transparency before deleting the original JPF.
