Free online CR3 to WEBP converter

CR3 files are camera RAW images, so many browsers, websites, and image editors cannot use them directly. Converting them to WEBP produces a smaller, web-compatible image for sharing, publishing, or storage.

What the CR3 format is

CR3 is Canon's RAW image format, based on the ISO Base Media File Format and commonly containing unprocessed sensor data. Canon mirrorless and compact cameras create CR3 files, including models that offer full-resolution RAW and compressed C-RAW recording.

A CR3 preserves substantially more capture information than a finished image: exposure latitude, white-balance data, camera metadata, and usually a preview image. Programs such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, Canon Digital Photo Professional, darktable, and some RawTherapee versions can open CR3 files, but support depends on the camera model and software version.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format designed for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and 8-bit RGB or RGBA images. Lossy WEBP files are often much smaller than JPEG files at comparable visual quality, while lossless WEBP can preserve every pixel.

WEBP is suitable for websites, messaging, previews, and applications that support modern browser image formats. It is not a RAW format: converting CR3 to WEBP renders the sensor data into a normal image and removes the ability to change exposure and white balance as freely as with the original file.

How to actually convert CR3 to WEBP

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the CR3-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com; it can be used for free without installing software.
2. Upload one or more files such as IMG_0001.CR3.
3. Select WEBP as the output format.
4. Choose a quality setting if the converter provides one. Use approximately 85–95 for general web images; choose lossless when exact pixel preservation matters.
5. Start the conversion and download the resulting .webp files.

Keep the original CR3 files separately if they may be needed for later editing or printing.

Using Adobe Lightroom or Camera Raw

1. Import the CR3 into Lightroom Classic or open it in Photoshop through Camera Raw.
2. Apply exposure, white balance, lens corrections, cropping, and sharpening before export.
3. In Lightroom, choose File → Export, select WEBP as the file format when available, set the quality and pixel dimensions, then export.
4. In Photoshop, choose File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As, select WEBP, set quality, and save the file.

If the installed Adobe version does not offer WEBP export, update it or render the edited image to TIFF or JPEG and use an image converter that supports both the rendered format and WEBP.

Using darktable

1. Import the CR3 into darktable and open it in the darkroom.
2. Make the required RAW adjustments.
3. Open the export options, select WEBP as the format, choose the quality and output dimensions, and export.

RAW support in darktable depends on its bundled LibRaw version, so a newly released Canon camera may require a current darktable release.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

WEBP conversion is a rendering step, not a container-only format change. The converter must decode the CR3, apply a color profile and tone curve, and encode the resulting raster image. A WEBP cannot retain the full editing latitude of the source RAW.

Use lossy WEBP for web delivery and previews. Lower quality produces smaller files but can create block artifacts, ringing around edges, and loss of fine foliage or texture. Lossless WEBP avoids lossy artifacts but can be larger than a well-encoded JPEG. Resize large camera images during export when the destination does not need their full resolution.

Use an sRGB output profile for websites and general device compatibility. Preserve EXIF metadata only when the destination supports it and privacy is acceptable; metadata may contain GPS coordinates, camera information, and timestamps. Keep the CR3 as the archival master because some applications, older operating systems, and professional workflows still lack WEBP support.
