How to convert fh9 to jpg file

A JPG is required when an old FreeHand drawing must be viewed on modern devices, shared by email, published online, or inserted into a document. Converting the file creates a broadly compatible raster image, but removes the editable vector structure of the original.

What the FH9 format is

FH9 is the native document format of Macromedia FreeHand 9, a discontinued vector-illustration and page-layout application. An FH9 file can contain paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, placed images, and page artwork. These files are most often found in older design archives and print-production projects.

Current operating systems normally have no built-in FH9 viewer. FreeHand 9, some later FreeHand releases, or a compatible conversion tool may be required to open the file. Adobe acquired Macromedia after FreeHand 9 was released, but modern Adobe applications do not generally provide native FH9 editing support.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written as JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, office software, and most image viewers. It is suitable for previews, web graphics, email attachments, and artwork where a smaller, widely compatible image matters more than editable source data.

JPG uses lossy compression and does not store vector objects, layers, or transparency. PNG is usually better for transparent logos and lossless line art, while PDF is better when scalable artwork or print-oriented output must be retained.

How to convert an FH9 file

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the FH9 converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing desktop software.
  2. Select or drop the .fh9 file into the upload area.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting JPG when processing is complete.

Inspect the output at full size. Legacy files can contain fonts, linked images, clipping paths, gradients, blends, or effects that an importer interprets differently from the original FreeHand document.

Using Macromedia FreeHand

  1. Open the file in Macromedia FreeHand 9, or in FreeHand 10 or MX if that version successfully reads the FH9 document.
  2. Resolve missing-font warnings and make sure linked graphics are available.
  3. Choose File → Export.
  4. Select JPEG or JPG, specify the output filename, and confirm the export.
  5. Set the resolution and JPEG quality if those controls are available, then check the exported image in an image viewer.

If the installed FreeHand version cannot export JPG directly, export the artwork as PDF or EPS, open that file in a raster editor such as Photoshop or GIMP, and use File → Export As or File → Save As to create the JPG.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Use about 300 ppi for print-sized artwork and roughly 96–150 ppi for screen previews. The required pixel dimensions depend on the intended physical or display size.
  • Rasterization turns text, curves, layers, and effects into pixels; the JPG cannot be edited as separate FreeHand objects.
  • JPG has no alpha channel. Set a solid background, commonly white, before export if the source artwork is transparent.
  • Review fonts, placed images, gradients, blends, clipping masks, and colors after conversion. Missing resources and differences between legacy and newer importers can change the appearance.
  • Use PNG for transparency or lossless sharp-edged graphics, and PDF when scalable or print-ready vector output is required.
  • Keep the original FH9 file. A JPG is a delivery or preview copy, not a replacement for the editable source.
