A JPG is required when a plain-text file must be submitted to an image-only form, displayed on a device without a text viewer, or shared as a fixed visual page. The conversion renders characters as pixels, so it does not retain selectable text, editing structure, or the original text file's encoding.

What the TEXT format is

TEXT usually means a plain-text file such as notes.txt or notes.text. It contains characters and line breaks, but normally has no fonts, colors, images, margins, or page layout. Encoding is generally inferred by the program opening the file; UTF-8 may be identified by a byte-order mark, but plain text does not reliably carry its encoding as document metadata.

Text editors, code editors, terminal tools, operating systems, export functions, and applications that create logs or configuration files commonly produce plain-text files. Notes, source code, subtitles, logs, and machine-readable data use plain text because it is compact and broadly supported.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format that stores a grid of pixels with lossy compression. Browsers, phones, image viewers, office software, and most image-upload forms support it.

JPG is useful for sharing a fixed visual page and reducing file size. It is a poor replacement for text when users need search, copy and paste, accessibility, editing, or long-term preservation. Compression can blur small lettering, and the image contains no text structure even when the characters are visually clear.

How to convert a TEXT file to JPG

Using desktop software: Open the file in a text editor or LibreOffice Writer, select a font with the required language support, and set the font size, line spacing, page size, margins, and line wrapping. The PDF intermediate step lets you control pagination; a JPG file itself is a single image, so a multipage source normally produces multiple JPG files or one unusually tall image.

ImageMagick can rasterize an existing PDF locally, for example magick -density 200 input.pdf -quality 90 page-%02d.jpg. The PDF input must be created first, and ImageMagick may require a permitted PDF delegate on the operating system. A screenshot is suitable only for a quick visual copy: it captures the current window, may omit content below the scroll area, and depends on display resolution.

Quality and compatibility limits

Render text at about 150–300 DPI for ordinary sharing and choose a JPG quality setting around 85–95. Higher JPEG quality cannot restore characters lost through low-resolution rendering; oversized text, margins, and image dimensions can instead increase file size.

UTF-8 and other non-ASCII characters render correctly only when the converter detects the source encoding and the selected font contains the required glyphs. Replacement characters or boxes indicate an encoding or font problem; reopen the source with the correct encoding or choose a font covering the relevant language and symbols.

Long files can produce several JPGs, a very tall image, or a result with converter-specific page limits. Keep the original TEXT file for editing and searching. Use PDF instead when selectable text, consistent pagination, accessibility, or archival fidelity matters.
