ECW stands for Enhanced Compressed Wavelet. It is a raster format often used for large geospatial, aerial, and satellite images. In many cases, you can convert .ecw files to JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg) with software that supports the ECW codec.

XnView can often open ECW files and export them to JPEG. IrfanView may also work, but ECW support depends on the installed plugin or codec and is not available in every version. Some graphics editors and GIS applications can open ECW files only if the proper import filter or plugin is installed.

Before converting, keep in mind that JPEG is a lossy format. That means the file may become smaller, but image quality can decrease. Also, JPEG does not preserve geospatial metadata such as map coordinates, projection data, or other spatial information. If you need to keep that information, a geospatial output such as GeoTIFF is usually a better choice than JPEG.

• Adjust quality settings if available, then save the file.

If your software cannot open ECW files, install an ECW-compatible plugin or use GIS software that supports the format. For batch conversion, GDAL can be useful if ECW support is enabled in your installation.
