Convert XMP to JPG

A website, phone, or image editor may require a shareable JPEG instead of a RAW photo accompanied by an XMP sidecar. Creating that JPEG requires rendering the original image with the XMP adjustments; an XMP file alone cannot supply the missing pixels.

What the XMP format is

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is an XML-based format for keywords, ratings, copyright information, camera metadata, and non-destructive editing instructions. Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, and Bridge commonly store these instructions in sidecar files such as DSC_1234.xmp beside DSC_1234.CR3. The two files normally share the same base name and folder.

XMP can also be embedded inside a RAW, TIFF, JPEG, or other supported file. An embedded XMP packet does not require conversion; the containing image can be exported or edited directly. A standalone sidecar normally contains no image pixels and cannot recreate a missing photograph.

What the JPG format is

JPG, or JPEG, is a widely supported raster-image format for websites, email, phones, social media, and printing. It is substantially smaller than most RAW files and can be opened by software that does not support camera RAW formats. JPEG uses lossy compression, so it discards image data and is less suitable than RAW or TIFF for repeated editing.

How to create a JPG from an XMP sidecar

Lightroom Classic

1. Place the matching RAW file and XMP sidecar in the same folder with identical base names, for example photo.CR3 and photo.xmp.
2. Import the RAW file through File → Import Photos and Video. Lightroom Classic normally reads the sidecar's develop settings when it imports the photograph.
3. Open the image in the Develop module and verify the crop, exposure, color, and other adjustments. If the settings are not present, select the photo and use Metadata → Read Metadata from File. Avoid using Metadata → Save Metadata to File until the desired source settings are confirmed, because that command can overwrite the sidecar.
4. Choose File → Export. Under File Settings, select JPEG, set an appropriate quality, commonly 85–95 for general delivery, choose the required color space, and export.

Camera Raw and Photoshop

1. Keep the XMP sidecar beside its matching RAW file.
2. Open the RAW file in Photoshop. Camera Raw normally loads a sidecar whose filename matches the RAW file.
3. Check the adjustments in Camera Raw and select Open.
4. In Photoshop, use File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As, choose JPEG, set the quality and color profile, and save the rendered image.

Other desktop and online options

darktable can import many RAW files and some Adobe XMP adjustments, then export the result through File → Export. Adobe-specific settings, masks, profiles, and newer adjustment types may render differently or be ignored. Test the result against the Adobe application when appearance matters.

CloudConvert and Convertio can convert supported rendered images, such as TIFF or PNG, to JPEG, but they generally do not apply a separate Adobe XMP sidecar to a RAW file. Uploading the RAW and XMP separately to an online service will not reliably produce the intended result. Online processing also exposes the image to a third party, so use desktop software for private or unreleased photographs.

ExifTool can copy XMP metadata into an already existing JPEG, but it cannot render a sidecar into image pixels. For example, exiftool -tagsFromFile photo.xmp -all:all existing.jpg transfers metadata to existing.jpg; it does not create the photograph or apply Lightroom's visual adjustments.

Quality and compatibility limits

If the matching RAW, TIFF, JPEG, or other source image is missing, no converter can produce the original picture from the XMP alone. Locate the original before attempting export.

RAW rendering depends on the application, camera profile, lens corrections, supported masks, and installed presets. Lightroom, Camera Raw, and darktable may therefore produce different JPEGs from the same sidecar. Export in sRGB for browsers, phones, and general sharing unless the recipient specifies another profile; retain the embedded profile when the workflow supports color management.

JPEG quality settings are application-specific and do not guarantee identical compression between programs. Export once from the original rather than repeatedly recompressing a JPEG, and keep the original RAW with its XMP sidecar for future changes. If the source is already a JPEG containing embedded XMP, edit or export that JPEG directly instead of treating its metadata as a separate image.
