What the TGA format is

TGA, or Truevision TGA, is a raster-image format used by 3D applications, game engines, texture pipelines, scanning software, and legacy graphics tools. Files can contain indexed color, 16-bit color, 24-bit color, or 32-bit color with an alpha channel; some use run-length encoding to reduce file size without changing pixel data. TGA files are commonly exported by Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, game-development tools, and older image software.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster format intended mainly for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Browsers, phones, document software, and most image editors support it, and its files are usually much smaller than uncompressed or lightly compressed TGA files. JPG cannot preserve transparency, layers, indexed-palette behavior, or exact pixel values.

Using GIMP

Open the file with File → Open.
If the TGA contains transparency, add a background layer and place it below the image layer. JPG cannot store an alpha channel.
Choose File → Export As, give the file a .jpg extension, and select Export.
Set JPEG quality to about 85–95, then confirm with Export. Use a higher value when preserving fine texture detail matters more than file size.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is suitable for terminal-based and batch conversion. A basic conversion is:

For a TGA with transparency, choose the background before removing the alpha channel:

Quality and compatibility limits

JPG conversion is not reversible. Its compression can introduce blocking, ringing, and loss of fine color detail, especially at low quality or after repeated saves. Keep the original TGA and create JPG derivatives from it instead of repeatedly editing and resaving the JPG.

Transparent pixels must be composited against a background color. White suits many documents, while black or a color matching the intended design may avoid a light fringe around transparent edges. If transparency, indexed data, exact colors, or lossless storage must survive, use PNG rather than JPG.
