What the OIB format is

OIB means Olympus Image Binary. It is a proprietary container used by Olympus imaging software and microscope systems, including cellSens and related acquisition applications. An OIB may contain more than one image series, fluorescence channels, focal planes, time points, calibration data, and microscope metadata, so it is not always equivalent to one flat picture.

OIB files are commonly opened with Olympus cellSens, OlyVIA, or the Bio-Formats importer included with Fiji/ImageJ. The file can normally be viewed without converting it, but general-purpose programs often do not recognize the format.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster-image format designed for compact photographic images. It works well for email attachments, reports, presentations, web pages, and basic editing because nearly every operating system and image application can open it.

JPG uses lossy compression, so it produces smaller files than many lossless formats but can discard fine detail and introduce compression artifacts. It stores a flattened image rather than the multidimensional acquisition data usually contained in an OIB.

How to convert OIB to JPG

Using Fiji/ImageJ with Bio-Formats

1. Install Fiji, which includes the Bio-Formats microscopy importer.
2. Open Fiji and choose File → Open, then select the .oib file.
3. In the Bio-Formats Importer, select the required image series. Adjust the view or select a particular channel, z-slice, or time point if the file contains multiple datasets.
4. Choose File → Save As → Jpeg.
5. Enter a filename ending in .jpg and set the JPEG quality when prompted. Save each required series or slice separately if the OIB contains multiple images.

For batch processing, Fiji macros can open OIB files through Bio-Formats and save selected planes as JPEG, but the correct series and dimensional settings must be specified for each dataset.

If the OIB contains grayscale or fluorescence data, verify the color mapping and brightness range after conversion; a display-oriented JPG may not represent the original intensity values faithfully.
