Free online LIF to JPG converter

Microscope software and image viewers may not open Leica .lif files, while JPG is accepted by common editors, browsers, reports, and messaging tools. Converting is also useful when a LIF contains one image that needs to be shared without the original microscopy software.

What the LIF format is

LIF is a Leica Image File format used by Leica Microsystems imaging systems and software such as Leica LAS X and older Leica application suites. It commonly stores microscopy data as a container with multiple image series, z-stacks, time points, channels, and acquisition metadata rather than as one flat picture.

A single LIF file can therefore contain several images at different resolutions or microscope settings. Opening the file may require software that supports Leica data through the Bio-Formats library.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster image format for web pages, office documents, presentations, email, and general-purpose image editing. It produces smaller files than uncompressed TIFF or many microscopy-native formats by using lossy compression.

JPG represents a rendered two-dimensional image. It does not preserve a LIF file's complete series structure, z-stack, time dimension, channel data, acquisition metadata, or scientific measurement information.

How to actually convert LIF to JPG

Using Fiji or ImageJ

1. Install Fiji, which includes ImageJ and the Bio-Formats importer.
2. Open the file through File → Open, or choose Plugins → Bio-Formats → Bio-Formats Importer, then select the .lif file.
3. In the Bio-Formats dialog, select the required image series. Disable Split channels unless separate channel images are needed, and enable a composite view when the channels should be rendered together.
4. Select the required z-slice and time point. A JPG cannot contain the complete multidimensional dataset.
5. Choose File → Save As → Jpeg, select a filename ending in .jpg, set the JPEG quality if offered, and save.

For a stack or time series, export the required slices or frames individually rather than saving only the currently displayed plane. Fiji can also create an animated or numbered image sequence, but each JPG remains a separate flat image.

Using Leica software

In Leica LAS X, open the LIF file, select the required series and display settings, then use the application's export command, commonly File → Export or File → Save As, and choose JPEG. Menu names vary between LAS X versions. Export the rendered view after selecting the channel composition, brightness, contrast, scale, and resolution.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Choose the image series, channel view, slice, and display adjustments before exporting; those choices determine what appears in the JPG. A LIF may contain 16-bit or floating-point intensity data, but JPG normally stores an 8-bit color image, so quantitative intensity information can be clipped or altered.

Use the highest available export resolution and a high JPEG quality setting for reports or publication drafts. For scientific archiving, quantitative analysis, or later reprocessing, keep the original LIF and consider exporting TIFF instead; JPG is unsuitable as the sole archival copy because it discards microscopy structure and introduces compression artifacts.
