What the OIF format is

OIF usually means Olympus Image Format, used by Olympus Fluoview and related microscopy systems to store fluorescence and other microscope acquisitions. An OIF dataset may contain multidimensional image data such as channels, Z slices, and time points, along with acquisition metadata; some datasets also use companion files or folders. You may encounter OIF files exported from Olympus cell-imaging software or received from a microscopy facility.

OIF is not normally a single flat picture. The file can describe how the image should be displayed, while the original dataset may contain more information than a JPG can preserve.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster image format designed for compact photographic and rendered-image storage. It opens in standard operating-system viewers, web browsers, presentation software, and image editors without specialized microscopy software.

JPG files are usually much smaller than microscope datasets, but JPEG compression is lossy. JPG does not preserve OIF acquisition metadata, multiple channels as separate data, Z stacks, time series, or the original scientific pixel values.

How to convert OIF to JPG

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the OIF-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the OIF file, or upload the complete OIF dataset if the converter requests associated files.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting JPG.

This method requires no installed software. Check the output carefully if the source contains multiple channels, slices, or time points, because JPG represents one rendered 2D view rather than the complete acquisition.

Using Fiji with Bio-Formats

1. Install Fiji, which includes the Bio-Formats importer used for many Olympus microscopy formats.
2. Open the file with File → Open. If Fiji does not identify it automatically, use Plugins → Bio-Formats → Bio-Formats Importer.
3. In the importer dialog, select the required channel, Z slice, and time point. For a composite image, enable the appropriate color or composite display settings.
4. Adjust brightness and contrast only if the JPG is intended as a presentation image. Avoid applying display changes to the only scientific copy.
5. Export the displayed frame with File → Save As → JPEG, choose a filename such as sample.jpg, and set the JPEG quality when prompted.

For a stack or time series, repeat the export for each required frame or first create a projection using Fiji's stack tools. A single JPG export cannot retain all dimensions of an OIF acquisition.

Quality and compatibility limitations

JPEG compression can create artifacts around fine structures and reduce the reliability of subtle intensity differences. Use a high quality setting for presentation images, and retain the original OIF dataset for measurement, reanalysis, or publication records.

Microscopy images may use 12-bit, 16-bit, or floating-point pixel data, whereas JPG normally stores an 8-bit-per-channel rendered image. Converting therefore applies a display transformation and may clip values outside the selected brightness range. Include a scale bar and preserve channel information in the filename or caption when the JPG will be used outside the microscopy application.
