WMF artwork may need conversion when it must be edited in Adobe Illustrator or supplied to a print workflow that accepts an Illustrator document. The conversion can retain vector paths, but fonts, effects, and Windows-specific drawing instructions require inspection afterward.

What the WMF format is

Windows Metafile (WMF) is an older Windows graphics format used by Microsoft Office, WordPad, clip-art libraries, diagramming applications, and Windows-based publishing software. It stores drawing instructions for lines, curves, text, fills, and patterns, and can also contain embedded bitmap images. WMF is suited to simple office and illustration graphics but is less consistent across modern operating systems and design applications than SVG, PDF, or newer native formats.

What the AI format is

Adobe Illustrator Artwork (AI) is Adobe Illustrator’s native document format for logos, illustrations, diagrams, typography, and prepress work. It can preserve editable paths, layers, clipping masks, gradients, strokes, and Illustrator-specific appearance data. AI is the appropriate target when the recipient needs to continue editing the artwork in Illustrator; it does not automatically improve the quality of bitmap content embedded in the WMF.

How to convert WMF to AI

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software:

1. Open the WMF-to-AI conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .wmf file.
3. Select AI as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .ai file and open it in Illustrator.
5. Check the artwork before delivery, especially text, line weights, fills, clipping, transparency, dimensions, and embedded images.

Do not upload confidential artwork unless the service’s current file-handling and retention terms are acceptable for that material.

Using Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator can open WMF files in versions that include WMF import support:

1. Choose File → Open and select the .wmf file.
2. Inspect the imported objects and correct any missing fonts, misplaced text, or altered fills and strokes.
3. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (.ai), and save the document.
4. Choose the Illustrator version required by the recipient. Enable PDF compatibility when the file must also open in PDF-aware software; this can increase the file size.

If Illustrator does not list WMF as an importable format or produces an incorrect result, use an intermediate SVG or PDF workflow instead.

Using Inkscape as an intermediate step

Inkscape can import many WMF files and can provide a useful fallback when Illustrator’s direct import fails:

1. Open the WMF with File → Open in Inkscape.
2. Check the imported paths, text, fills, strokes, and page dimensions.
3. Save an intermediate SVG with File → Save As. If SVG import is unsuitable, create a vector PDF with File → Save a Copy.
4. Open the SVG or PDF in Illustrator.
5. Save the document as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) with File → Save As.

Inkscape normally does not create a native Illustrator AI document with Illustrator-specific editing data; the final save in Illustrator is required for that format. Convert text to paths only when the required fonts are unavailable or identical rendering matters more than text editability.

Quality and compatibility limits

WMF conversion may change font substitution and text placement, hatch patterns, gradients, transparency, line joins, clipping, scaling, and device-dependent drawing behavior. Compare the converted file with the source at high zoom and verify document size, orientation, color mode, bleed, stroke widths, and overprint settings before sending it to print.

A WMF can contain raster images, and placing those images inside an AI file does not increase their pixel resolution. Bitmap elements may therefore remain unsuitable for large-format output even when the surrounding paths convert correctly. Outline text improves portability but removes editability and may increase the file size.
