Free online RTF to AI converter

Adobe Illustrator requires AI when RTF content must become part of an Illustrator document for editing, layout, or print production. Because RTF stores formatted text rather than vector artwork, the conversion normally creates an Illustrator document from the text or uses PDF as an intermediate format.

What the RTF format is

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document format that stores text, basic character formatting, paragraph settings, tables, and sometimes embedded images. Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice Writer, and many older word processors can create RTF files. RTF commonly appears when exchanging formatted text between applications that do not share a native document format.

RTF is page-oriented document data, not an illustration format. Its font definitions, margins, headers, tables, fields, and pagination do not map directly to Illustrator objects.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native graphics format. It stores vector paths, type objects, placed images, layers, artboards, colors, effects, and Illustrator-specific editing information. Vector objects can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images.

AI is appropriate when the converted content must be edited in Illustrator, combined with logos or other artwork, prepared for print, or exported to formats such as PDF, SVG, or EPS. An RTF file containing ordinary paragraphs will not become complex vector artwork automatically; the useful result is usually editable text positioned on an Illustrator artboard.

How to actually convert RTF to AI

Use the built-in online converter

2. Upload the .rtf file or select it with the file picker.
3. Choose AI as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .ai file and open it in Adobe Illustrator.
5. Check text positions, fonts, page boundaries, and any embedded images before saving production artwork.

Use a desktop workflow when layout control matters

1. Open the RTF in LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word and verify fonts, line breaks, tables, and images.
2. Export it as PDF using File → Export as PDF in LibreOffice or File → Save As → PDF in Word.
3. Open the PDF in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open, then select the required page if the PDF contains multiple pages.
4. Review the imported objects and save the document with File → Save As, selecting Adobe Illustrator (.ai).

For a text-only design, another option is to create a new Illustrator document, copy the RTF text from a word processor, paste it into an Illustrator area-text object, apply matching fonts, and save as .ai. This gives better control than importing a whole page but requires manual recreation of layout.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion cannot preserve every RTF feature as an editable Illustrator equivalent. Headers, footers, footnotes, tracked changes, fields, comments, complex tables, and word-processor pagination may be flattened, rearranged, or omitted. Missing fonts can change line wrapping and cause text to overflow.

PDF-based conversion may split text into separate objects or convert some formatting into outlines, depending on the source application and Illustrator version. Outlined text preserves appearance but is no longer directly editable and requires licensing or supplied font files only before outlining. Embedded raster images remain raster images inside the AI file; conversion does not increase their resolution.

Open the saved AI file in the Illustrator version used for production and inspect every artboard at the intended output size. Save a PDF proof and retain the original RTF because AI conversion is not a reversible preservation of the source document.
