A DWG drawing needs conversion when a CAD file must be edited in Adobe Illustrator, placed in print artwork, or delivered to a workflow that accepts Illustrator files instead of CAD data. The conversion produces an .ai document, but it does not preserve the complete CAD model or its parametric behavior.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a proprietary binary CAD drawing format associated primarily with Autodesk AutoCAD and supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It stores precise 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, hatches, object properties, model space, paper-space layouts, and references to external files.

Architects, engineers, surveyors, manufacturers, contractors, and fabricators use DWG for floor plans, elevations, mechanical parts, site layouts, infrastructure drawings, and construction documentation.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It stores editable vector paths, text, fills, strokes, clipping masks, layers, gradients, and Illustrator-specific effects for illustrations, diagrams, signage, typography, and print layouts. An AI file can also contain embedded raster images.

AI is suitable when linework must be edited as Illustrator artwork. It is not a CAD exchange format: parametric constraints, 3D solids, intelligent dimensions, engineering metadata, xrefs, dynamic blocks, and many CAD-specific object behaviors do not survive as equivalent AI objects.

Convert DWG directly in Illustrator

1. Make a copy of the original .dwg. In AutoCAD or another DWG-compatible CAD application, check units, model-space or layout content, layer visibility, lineweights, fonts, hatches, and external references.
2. In Illustrator, choose File → Open and select the DWG. Illustrator versions that support DWG/DXF import display an import dialog where you can select units, scale, layout or model-space content, and layers. If the file is unsupported, save a compatible .dxf from the CAD application and open that instead.
3. Import only the layers needed for the artwork. Confirm the selected unit and scale; incorrect unit interpretation can make the drawing appear too large or too small.
4. Compare a known dimension or calibration distance with the source drawing. Inspect paths, line joins, hatches, text, clipping, artboard bounds, and layer organization.
5. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (.ai), and enable Create PDF Compatible File when the document must be previewed or exchanged with applications that use the PDF-compatible portion of an AI file.

Direct import generally gives better access to individual 2D geometry than a plotted PDF, but the imported result may contain groups, ordinary paths, or substituted objects rather than editable CAD entities.

Convert through a vector PDF

Use a vector PDF when the required result is the appearance of a plotted drawing or sheet rather than a complete CAD database.

1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD or another CAD application and set the required layer visibility, paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, and plot-style or lineweight table.
2. Choose Output → Plot or Output → Export → PDF, or select the application’s vector PDF plotter. Avoid raster image export. A vector PDF remains sharp when zoomed and can provide paths for Illustrator to import.
3. Open the PDF in Illustrator with File → Open and select the required page if it contains multiple layouts.
4. Inspect scale, lineweights, text, clipping boundaries, joins, and dimensions, then save with File → Save As as an AI file.

PDF conversion preserves the plotted presentation more consistently than direct object conversion, but it normally imports geometry as groups and paths. Text may remain editable, use a substituted font, or become outlines depending on the PDF driver, font, and Illustrator import behavior.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Check scale after conversion. DWG unit metadata may be absent or interpreted differently by CAD software, Illustrator, a PDF workflow, or a converter. Measure a known feature in the imported artwork. For plotted output, establish the paper scale before export; for geometry intended to remain measurable, use a documented 1:1 or known scale.
• CAD layers can become Illustrator layers, groups, or separate paths. Layer names, frozen states, blocks, viewports, xrefs, and visibility settings may not transfer exactly.
• Dimensions, leaders, constraints, 3D solids, proxy objects, custom entities, complex hatches, transparency, and specialized linetypes may be omitted, flattened, or converted into ordinary paths.
• SHX and other CAD fonts may be unavailable in Illustrator. Font substitution changes text width and alignment. Install the required fonts before import when editable text is needed. For approved final artwork, use Type → Create Outlines; outlined text is no longer editable, so retain an editable text copy.
• Thin CAD strokes can appear too light or disappear at the intended print size. Check lineweights at final output dimensions. Converting every stroke to outlined shapes can greatly increase object count and file size.
• Keep the original DWG and, when relevant, the plotted PDF with the AI file. The AI copy is not a substitute for the source CAD drawing when future engineering revisions are possible.
