How to convert svg to ai file

Some print shops, Illustrator templates, and design handoffs require an .ai file instead of an SVG. Saving the artwork as AI also provides an Illustrator-native file for continued editing, but the result must be checked because SVG features do not map perfectly to Illustrator.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector format for logos, icons, diagrams, maps, illustrations, and web graphics. It stores paths, shapes, text, gradients, clipping paths, masks, and style information rather than a fixed-resolution bitmap, so supported artwork can scale without pixelation.

Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, Figma, and web-export tools can create SVG files. Web browsers display SVG directly, which makes it common for interface graphics and artwork downloaded from websites. An SVG can also contain embedded or linked raster images, fonts referenced through CSS, metadata, animation, and scripts.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's proprietary artwork format. It is designed for editing Illustrator documents containing paths, layers or groups, artboards, swatches, clipping masks, transparency, and Illustrator-specific appearance settings.

AI is appropriate when a printer, designer, or production workflow specifically requests editable Illustrator artwork. Modern Illustrator files can include PDF-compatible data for previews and placement in other applications, but AI remains more dependent on Illustrator version and application support than SVG. A converter may create an AI container without preserving every feature as a fully editable Illustrator object.

How to convert an SVG to AI

Adobe Illustrator

  1. Open Illustrator and choose File → Open, then select the .svg file.
  2. Review the SVG import options. Keep the defaults unless the file depends on a particular CSS interpretation, font treatment, or image-linking method.
  3. Inspect the imported artwork at its intended size. Check fonts, stroke widths, gradients, transparency, clipping masks, filters, linked images, layers or groups, and artboard dimensions.
  4. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (AI), and save the document.
  5. In the Illustrator Options dialog, choose the required Illustrator version. Enable Create PDF Compatible File when the recipient needs previews or placement in PDF-compatible applications; this option can increase the file size.

Illustrator is the most reliable choice when the recipient needs a genuine, editable AI document because it interprets the SVG and writes the native format directly.

Online conversion

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the SVG, choose AI as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ai file. Open the result in Illustrator before production use and verify dimensions, fonts, images, transparency, and editability. Do not upload confidential artwork unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Desktop alternatives

Inkscape opens and edits many SVG files, but it does not provide full modern AI authoring. Its Illustrator-related export options may produce legacy or intermediary formats rather than an AI file with Illustrator's native features. For an Illustrator production handoff, use Inkscape only to inspect or clean the SVG, then open the result in Illustrator and save it as AI.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Text: SVG text can change when the referenced font is missing, when CSS is interpreted differently, or when font metrics differ. Install and package the required fonts, or duplicate the document and use Type → Create Outlines when exact appearance matters. Outlining removes text editing and can substantially increase path complexity.
  • Effects: SVG filters, blend modes, CSS styles, animations, scripts, and complex masks may be simplified, rasterized, or discarded. SVG animation and scripts do not become equivalent Illustrator artwork.
  • Images: Embedded images normally travel with the artwork, while linked images require their source files. Embed or package linked images before delivery if the AI file must work on another computer.
  • Geometry: Review page size, artboards, viewBox settings, units, strokes, and scaling. SVG commonly uses CSS pixels, while Illustrator documents may use points, millimeters, or other units; conversion can expose rounding or dimension differences.
  • Structure: SVG groups and layer names may import differently, and some appearance effects may become expanded paths or raster content. An extension change alone does not convert the file or create an editable AI document.
  • Versioning: Select the Illustrator version required by the recipient. Saving for an older version can remove newer Illustrator features, while an older application may fail to open a newer AI document.
