What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used for editable word-processing documents. LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, Collabora Office, and other OpenDocument-compatible programs create ODT files; common contents include paragraphs, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, and page layouts.

ODT is not a graphics format. Its layout is organized around flowing text and pages rather than Illustrator objects, paths, artboards, and layers.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator Artwork, a format designed for vector illustrations, logos, diagrams, typography, and print graphics. AI files can retain paths, fills, strokes, text objects, clipping masks, layers, artboards, and Illustrator-specific editing data.

Illustrator can open imported PDF, SVG, and EPS content, but an ODT document does not convert into native Illustrator objects without an intermediate export. AI is appropriate when the result must be edited in Adobe Illustrator or incorporated into a vector-production workflow.

How to actually convert ODT to AI

Using LibreOffice and Adobe Illustrator

1. Open the ODT in LibreOffice Writer and check page size, margins, fonts, images, and page breaks.
2. Export it as a PDF through File → Export as PDF. Enable font embedding where available and export all required pages.
3. Open the resulting PDF in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open. Select the required page if Illustrator displays a page-selection dialog.
4. Inspect the imported artwork. Illustrator may separate PDF elements into groups, clipping masks, text objects, and paths.
5. Save the document through File → Save As, choose Adobe Illustrator (*.AI), and confirm the Illustrator options.

For batch PDF creation, LibreOffice can export headlessly with libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output document.odt; the resulting PDF still needs to be opened and saved in Illustrator to produce an AI file.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF preserves the ODT document’s page appearance better than a direct text-to-vector transformation, but it does not guarantee a clean, fully editable Illustrator layout. Flowing text can become separate objects, unsupported fonts can substitute, tables may import as grouped shapes, and transparency or positioned images can require manual repair.

If the document contains several pages, Illustrator treats PDF pages as separate imported pages rather than a normal word-processing document. For a single graphic, export only the needed page or crop the imported artwork to the intended artboard.

SVG is another intermediate format when the ODT content has first been recreated as vector artwork, but ordinary ODT exports do not preserve page layout as SVG. Converting the PDF to AI changes the container and Illustrator editability; it does not automatically turn raster images embedded in the ODT into vector paths.
