Adobe Illustrator and some print workflows require .ai artwork, while BMP files contain pixels rather than editable vector paths. The required result may be an AI document containing the original bitmap or a traced vector recreation that can be edited and scaled.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster graphics format associated with Windows imaging tools, Microsoft Paint, scanners, screenshots, and older graphics software. It stores image pixels directly at color depths such as 1, 4, 8, 24, or 32 bits; many BMP variants use little or no compression.

A BMP preserves the source pixels but remains resolution-dependent. Enlarging it cannot restore detail and can make edges appear jagged. BMP is used for screenshots, scanned material, icons, simple illustrations, and legacy Windows graphics, although PNG or JPEG is usually smaller for distribution.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It stores editable vector objects including paths, fills, strokes, text, gradients, masks, and symbols, which can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images. AI files can also contain embedded or linked raster images and PDF-compatible data.

Saving a BMP in an AI document does not convert its pixels into vector geometry. It only places the bitmap in an Illustrator file. Vectorization requires tracing the bitmap and then expanding the trace into paths.

How to convert BMP in Illustrator

Trace the image when the result must contain editable vector shapes, such as a logo, icon, or high-contrast drawing.

1. Open Illustrator and choose File → Open to open the BMP, or create a document and choose File → Place to insert it.
2. Select the placed image and open Window → Image Trace.
3. Choose a preset. Black and White Logo suits high-contrast line art; 3 Colors, 6 Colors, or 16 Colors suits simple color artwork. Photo presets can create very large, complex path sets and rarely reproduce a photograph as efficiently as a raster image.
4. Adjust Threshold for black-and-white artwork or Colors for color artwork. Refine Paths, Corners, and Noise to balance detail against path complexity. Use Ignore White when white background areas should be omitted.
5. Click Expand in the Image Trace or Properties controls. This replaces the trace preview with editable paths. Use Object → Ungroup and the Selection or Direct Selection tools to remove unwanted shapes and correct details.
6. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI), select a compatibility version if required, and save the file.

Keep the bitmap unchanged when pixel fidelity matters more than editable shapes:

1. Create or open an Illustrator document and choose File → Place.
2. Select the BMP, position it, and set its physical size. Keep the original dimensions or use a size that provides sufficient pixels for the intended output resolution.
3. Embed the image through the Links panel when the AI file must be self-contained. Leave it linked when keeping the BMP outside the AI file is acceptable; the linked file must remain at an accessible path when the document is opened.
4. Choose File → Save As and select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI).

Quality and compatibility limits

Image Trace estimates paths from pixel boundaries; it does not recover the original geometry, fonts, layers, or design intent. Low resolution, anti-aliased edges, noise, compression artifacts, gradients, and photographs can produce inaccurate contours or excessive numbers of paths.

Use the highest-resolution BMP available and clean isolated noise before tracing. Inspect corners, thin lines, small holes, and transparent-looking background areas after Expand. For photographs and textured artwork, embedding the bitmap is usually more faithful than tracing; use PNG or TIFF when a raster image is needed without an AI container.

Embedding increases the AI file size, while linking reduces the document’s self-containment. AI files saved with newer Illustrator features may not open identically in older Illustrator releases or non-Adobe vector applications, so select the required compatibility option and test the saved file in the target software.
