Print and design workflows may require an Adobe Illustrator file for editing, packaging, or handoff, while the source artwork is often a raster TIF from a scanner or photo editor. The conversion can either place that bitmap in an AI document or trace it into editable vector paths; these outcomes are not equivalent.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster graphics format used for scanned documents, photographs, maps, print assets, and archival images. It supports uncompressed and lossless-compressed data, several color models, high bit depths, and multi-page documents through multiple image directories. Layer support depends on the application that created the file; a layered Photoshop TIFF is not guaranteed to preserve its layers in other software.

A TIF stores a fixed grid of pixels. Enlarging it beyond its effective resolution can produce softness or visible pixelation, but the format preserves more image data than lossy formats such as JPEG. Scanners and applications including Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and desktop-publishing software commonly create TIF files.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It can store vector paths, fills, strokes, type, gradients, transparency, masks, symbols, and placed raster images. Vector objects can be resized without the pixelation associated with bitmap images.

AI is used for logos, icons, illustrations, packaging, diagrams, and other artwork that must remain editable in an Illustrator workflow. It is a proprietary format, although Illustrator can save a PDF-compatible portion for applications that support embedded PDF data. An AI file containing a placed or embedded TIF is still partly or entirely raster artwork; saving a bitmap as AI does not create vector geometry.

How to convert TIF to AI

Trace the TIF into editable vectors in Illustrator

1. Open Illustrator and choose File → Open, then select the .tif file. Illustrator places the bitmap on the artboard.
2. Select the image and open Window → Image Trace.
3. Choose a preset that matches the source. Use a black-and-white preset for monochrome logos, a line-art or sketched-art preset for drawings, and a color preset for flat-color graphics.
4. Adjust the trace settings, including threshold or color count, paths, corners, and noise. Enable Ignore White when the white background should become transparent.
5. Click Expand to replace the trace result with editable paths. Ungroup the result and remove unwanted fragments with the Selection and Direct Selection tools.
6. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (AI), and save as filename.ai. Keep Create PDF Compatible File enabled when the file must be opened by PDF-aware software.

Put the original bitmap in an AI document

Open the TIF in Illustrator, or create an Illustrator document and place it with File → Place, then choose File → Save As and select Adobe Illustrator (AI). This creates an AI document that contains a raster image rather than vector paths.

Open Window → Links to check the asset. An embedded TIF travels inside the AI file but increases its size; a linked TIF keeps the AI smaller but requires the original file to remain available at the recorded location. Embed the image before handoff if the recipient will not receive the linked asset separately.

Quality and compatibility limits

Image Trace cannot recover vector geometry that was never present in the TIF. Photographs, gradients, shadows, anti-aliased edges, and compression artifacts can generate thousands of inaccurate paths or an unnecessarily large file. Manual cleanup is normally required for production artwork.

For logos and line drawings, use the highest-resolution source available, preferably uncompressed or losslessly compressed, and remove noise before tracing. Inspect the result at 100% magnification and test small features at the intended output size. Text traced from a TIF becomes outlined shapes; recreate it with the correct font if editable type is required.

Illustrator version differences can affect supported AI features. For handoff to users without Illustrator, export a PDF or SVG in addition to the AI file. Supply fonts when the file contains live text and supply linked TIF assets when they were not embedded.
