A game engine, legacy graphics application, or texture pipeline may require a .tga texture while the supplied scan or source artwork is a TIFF. The conversion repackages the raster pixels for software that expects TGA, often with a usable alpha channel.

What TIFF stores

TIFF, usually stored as .tif or .tiff, is a tagged raster-image format used by scanners, photographers, publishers, prepress systems, GIS software, microscopy tools, and image-editing applications. A TIFF can contain grayscale, RGB, CMYK, or Lab image data; 8-bit, 16-bit, or higher-precision channels; embedded ICC profiles; metadata; and multiple pages.

TIFF supports uncompressed data and several compression methods, including lossless LZW, ZIP, and PackBits. It can also use JPEG compression, which is lossy. Application-specific TIFF data may retain features such as Photoshop layers, but those features do not transfer to TGA.

What TGA stores

TGA, or Truevision TARGA, is a simple raster format commonly used by older game engines, 3D tools, texture pipelines, sprites, and UI asset workflows. Common TGA variants are 8-bit grayscale, 24-bit RGB, and 32-bit RGBA; a 32-bit file stores 8-bit red, green, blue, and alpha channels.

TGA supports uncompressed pixels and lossless run-length encoding (RLE). Its alpha channel is useful for transparency or texture masks, but TGA does not directly represent TIFF features such as CMYK, Lab, multipage documents, high-bit-depth RGB data, or reliably preserved ICC profiles and metadata. An uncompressed TGA can also be larger than a compressed TIFF.

Converting a TIFF file to TGA

Upload the .tif or .tiff file to the converter on 101convert.com, select TGA when an output selector is shown, run the conversion, and download the .tga result. Open the result in the destination application before replacing source files or processing a large batch.

For an opaque texture, use 24-bit RGB when the receiving program accepts it. Choose 32-bit RGBA when the TIFF contains meaningful transparency or when the destination uses the alpha channel as an opacity, gloss, roughness, specular, or mask channel. Do not create a 32-bit TGA merely to preserve a selection or an unused alpha channel unless the target pipeline requires it.

In Adobe Photoshop, open the TIFF, convert CMYK or Lab artwork to the required RGB working space, and flatten only if transparency is not needed. Use File → Save a Copy, or File → Save As in versions that list the format there, select Targa, then choose 24-bit or 32-bit output. Disable RLE compression if the destination documentation requires uncompressed TGA.

In GIMP, open the TIFF and use File → Export As. Give the output a .tga extension, select Export, and select RLE compression only when the receiving application supports it. Retain the image alpha channel before export when transparent pixels or a mask must be carried into the TGA.

For command-line or batch conversion, ImageMagick can convert the first page of a TIFF with magick "input.tif[0]" -depth 8 output.tga. Use a separate output file for every TIFF page; a multipage TIFF is not equivalent to one TGA file.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Most TGA workflows use 8 bits per color channel. Exporting a 16-bit-per-channel or floating-point TIFF to TGA reduces precision and can reveal banding in smooth gradients; apply dithering before export if the target asset shows visible gradients.
• Convert CMYK and Lab TIFF files to the RGB color space expected by the destination, commonly sRGB, before export. A printer-oriented CMYK profile can produce different colors after RGB conversion.
• TIFF pages, editable layers, paths, annotations, geospatial tags, and most metadata do not map to TGA. Export each required page or layer as its own image.
• TGA RLE compression is lossless, but some older importers accept only uncompressed TGA files. Test the exact TGA variant required by the target software.
• Alpha interpretation is application-specific. A game engine may treat TGA alpha as opacity, while another pipeline may read it as a separate material mask; inspect the channel in the destination tool.
• Some software interprets TGA pixel origin differently, which can display an image vertically flipped. If that occurs, flip the image vertically before export or change the importer setting when available.
