How to perform the conversion

Converting TIF to text is not a direct image-to-text format change in the usual sense. Because TIF is an image format, the conversion normally requires OCR to extract the text from the image and save it as .txt.

Best approach: use OCR software such as ABBYY FineReader, Adobe Acrobat for scanned documents, or the open-source Tesseract OCR engine.

1. Open the .tif file in an OCR-capable application.
2. Run text recognition on the image or document pages.
3. Review the recognized text for errors, especially if the scan is blurry, skewed, or low contrast.
4. Export or save the result as a .txt file.

For example, with Tesseract OCR on the command line, you can extract text like this: tesseract input.tif output. This creates a text file named output.txt.

If you are using Adobe Acrobat with a scanned TIFF, open the file and choose File → Export To → Text or use the OCR tools first, then export the recognized content as plain text. In ABBYY FineReader, open the TIFF, verify the OCR result, and choose File → Save As → Plain Text.

Notes on quality and limitations

OCR accuracy is the main factor in this conversion. Clean, high-resolution scans with clear printed text produce the best results. Handwriting, faded pages, skewed scans, complex layouts, tables, and mixed-language documents may lead to recognition errors.

If the TIFF contains multiple pages, the output text may be combined into one file or split depending on the software. Formatting such as columns, headings, and tables is often lost when saving to plain text. If you need to preserve layout, a richer output format such as .docx or .pdf may be more appropriate.

Also note that if the TIF file is only a photograph or graphic with no readable text, OCR may produce little or no useful output. In that case, the result will be an empty or inaccurate text file.
