What the TIF format is
TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for Tagged Image File Format, a raster format used by scanners, photographers, print-production systems, medical-imaging software, GIS applications, and archival workflows. TIFF commonly stores uncompressed or losslessly compressed pixel data, preserving detail at the cost of large files.
A TIFF can contain grayscale, RGB, CMYK, or other color data; alpha channels; 8-, 16-, or 32-bit samples; multiple pages or frames; and, depending on the application, layers or editing-related data. These features are not necessarily preserved when exporting to AVIF.
What the AVIF format is
AVIF is an image format that stores still images using the AV1 codec in a HEIF-based container. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, HDR, wide-gamut color, and 8-, 10-, and 12-bit images when the encoder and destination software support them.
AVIF is intended mainly for websites, applications, and image-delivery systems. Lossy AVIF is often much smaller than an equivalent TIFF, while lossless AVIF can reduce storage without changing decoded pixel values. Results vary with image content, encoder, and settings; AVIF is not guaranteed to beat every JPEG or PNG.
How to convert TIF to AVIF online
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software:
- Open the TIFF-to-AVIF converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.tifor.tifffile. - Choose
AVIFas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.aviffile and open it in the software or browser that will use it.
Do not upload confidential scans, medical images, or unpublished work unless the service’s retention and handling terms are suitable for that material.
How to convert TIF to AVIF with desktop software
In an AVIF-capable image editor, open the TIFF and select File → Export or File → Save As. Choose AVIF, select lossy or lossless output if available, set the quality and bit-depth options, then save. Current versions of GIMP and other image editors may support AVIF directly; support and menu names depend on the installed version and encoder.
For batch jobs or automation, ImageMagick can convert a file from the command line:
magick input.tif -quality 80 output.avif
The -quality value is an encoder setting, not a percentage of retained pixels. Test values around 60–90 on representative images: photographs often tolerate lower settings than text, screenshots, line art, or images with fine edges. ImageMagick must be compiled with AVIF support, commonly provided through a libheif delegate. Check the installation with:
magick -version
If the output does not list AVIF or HEIC support, install an AVIF-capable build or use an editor that can export AVIF. For a lossless command-line export, the available syntax depends on the ImageMagick and libheif versions; use the build’s documented HEIF lossless option and verify the decoded result rather than assuming that a quality value is lossless.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- Lossy conversion discards data. Compare text, sharp edges, gradients, noise, and transparency at the intended display size before selecting a quality level.
- Color conversion can change appearance. CMYK or Lab TIFFs usually need conversion to RGB for screen delivery. Embed or verify an sRGB profile for general web use, and check wide-gamut or HDR output in the actual target software.
- Document structure may be lost. A multipage TIFF normally must be exported as separate AVIF files. Layers, unusual TIFF tags, resolution metadata, ICC profiles, and application-specific editing data may not survive the conversion.
- AVIF is not a universal editing or archive format. Current browsers and operating systems generally support it, but older viewers, office applications, content-management systems, and image editors may not. Keep the original TIFF as the master and provide JPEG or PNG when compatibility is required.
- Repeated lossy conversion reduces quality. Convert from the original TIFF rather than repeatedly re-exporting an already compressed AVIF.
