Free online FH5 to AI converter

An old FH5 drawing needs conversion when current Adobe Illustrator or a print workflow requires an AI file for editing, delivery, or archiving. Converting it also avoids keeping obsolete FreeHand software available merely to view one illustration.

What the FH5 format is

FH5 is the file extension used by Macromedia FreeHand 5 for proprietary vector documents. FH5 files can contain paths, text, fills, strokes, layers, symbols, page layouts, and linked or embedded bitmap graphics. They remain in archives of logos, technical illustrations, advertisements, packaging, and other print artwork created on older Macintosh and Windows systems.

Modern Adobe Illustrator releases generally do not open FH5 directly. The file must normally be processed by a compatible FreeHand installation, a legacy Illustrator import tool, or a conversion utility.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator Artwork, the native document format of Adobe Illustrator. It can preserve editable vector paths, layers, text, clipping masks, gradients, spot colors, and Illustrator-specific data. Vector objects can be resized without the resolution loss associated with raster images.

AI is appropriate when the converted drawing must be edited in Illustrator, placed into an Adobe workflow, or supplied to a designer or prepress operator that requests Illustrator artwork. The retained features depend on the source document and the export method; conversion does not guarantee a feature-for-feature recreation.

How to convert FH5 to AI online

1. Make a copy of the original .fh5 file and keep it unchanged as the archival source.

3. Start the conversion and download the generated .ai file when processing finishes.

How to convert it with desktop software

1. Open the file in Macromedia FreeHand 5 or a later FreeHand release that can read FH5 documents, such as FreeHand 8, 9, or MX. The required legacy application may need an older operating system or virtual machine.
2. Use File → Open to load the FH5 file. Record missing-font and missing-link warnings, then check the page size, layers, text, imported graphics, colors, and effects.
3. Use File → Export and select an Adobe Illustrator format supported by that FreeHand release. Choose the lowest Illustrator compatibility level required by the receiving application, if the export dialog provides that choice.
4. Open the exported .ai file in Illustrator, correct any conversion problems, and save it with File → Save As. Embed or package linked images when the recipient needs a self-contained document, and supply licensed fonts or outline display text only in a final copy.

Adobe also published a FreeHand import script for certain older Illustrator releases, notably CS4 and CS5. It is not a general solution for current Illustrator versions, and its supported FreeHand versions and installation requirements must match the specific Illustrator release. If the script is used, open the imported artwork in Illustrator and save a new AI document after checking it.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Fonts: A substituted font can change line breaks, spacing, and object dimensions. Install the original font where licensed, or outline text in a separate final-production copy while retaining editable text in the master.
• Effects: FreeHand blends, lens effects, complex gradients, transparency, and special fills can change appearance, become separate objects, flatten, or rasterize during export.
• Images: Linked bitmap files may remain external and fail to appear if their paths are unavailable. Keep the source images and confirm whether they are embedded or linked in the resulting AI file.
• Color: Check spot colors, custom swatches, CMYK values, overprints, and document color settings in Illustrator against the printer's specifications. An automatic RGB-to-CMYK conversion may change the printed appearance.
• Geometry: Compare dimensions and alignment after conversion. Scaling, stroke behavior, clipping masks, and compound paths can differ between FreeHand and Illustrator.
• Compatibility: Saving through older AI compatibility settings can improve exchange with legacy applications but may discard newer Illustrator features. Use the recipient's required version and avoid repeated round-tripping between formats.
