What the ODG format is

ODG is the OpenDocument Graphics format used for vector drawings, diagrams, flowcharts, posters, and page layouts. LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw create ODG files; they commonly appear when drawings are exchanged within OpenDocument-based office workflows.

An ODG file can contain vector shapes, text, connectors, fills, strokes, images, layers, and page settings. Its structure is not the same as Adobe Illustrator’s native document structure, so conversion may change unsupported effects, fonts, or layout features.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator Artwork, Adobe Illustrator’s native vector format. It is used for logo editing, illustration, prepress production, cutting paths, and other workflows that require Illustrator-specific objects and controls.

AI files can retain editable paths, text, gradients, swatches, clipping masks, and Illustrator metadata. AI is proprietary and version-dependent; files saved for older Illustrator versions may lose newer features, while some applications can read only the PDF-compatible portion embedded in an AI file.

How to actually convert ODG to AI

Using LibreOffice Draw and Adobe Illustrator

1. Open the file in LibreOffice Draw with File → Open and select drawing.odg.
2. Check page size, object positions, fonts, transparencies, and clipping. Replace unavailable fonts before exporting.
3. For the most reliable vector interchange, use File → Export, select SVG, and save the drawing. If the layout is page-oriented or SVG export changes it, use File → Export as PDF instead.
4. Open the exported drawing.svg or drawing.pdf in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open. Choose the required page or PDF import settings.
5. Inspect the artwork, ungroup objects where appropriate, convert critical text to outlines with Type → Create Outlines, and repair any missing masks or substituted fonts.
6. Save the result with File → Save As, choose Adobe Illustrator (AI), select the required Illustrator version and PDF compatibility option, then save.

SVG is preferable when the source consists mainly of vector objects and text. PDF is preferable when page geometry, print appearance, or a complex Draw layout must be preserved. If Adobe Illustrator is unavailable, LibreOffice can create the intermediate SVG or PDF, but a compatible vector editor is still needed to produce a genuinely native AI file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• ODG and AI do not share identical object models. Draw-specific connectors, chart objects, 3D effects, certain gradients, and complex transparency may be flattened, substituted, or separated into simpler objects.
• Text remains editable only when the conversion preserves the font and the target application supports the resulting text structure. Outlining text prevents font substitution but removes normal text editing.
• Raster images embedded in ODG remain raster images in the AI file; conversion does not increase their resolution. Check effective DPI at the intended print size.
• PDF-based conversion can preserve visual appearance while reducing editability. SVG can preserve individual paths but may interpret page boundaries, text, filters, and clipping differently.
• Before delivery, verify color mode, bleed, page dimensions, overprinting, linked or embedded images, and the AI compatibility version required by the recipient.
