How to perform the conversion

The most reliable desktop tool for converting SVG to PS is Inkscape. It preserves vector paths well and is suitable for most artwork. If your SVG contains fonts, filters, or advanced effects, Inkscape is usually the best starting point because it can render and export the artwork into PostScript-compatible output.

1. Open the SVG file in Inkscape.
2. Check the artwork for missing fonts, unsupported effects, or clipping issues.
3. If needed, convert text to paths first to avoid font substitution problems: Path → Object to Path.
4. Export or save as PostScript: File → Save As or File → Save a Copy, then choose PostScript (*.ps) if available in your version.

If your Inkscape version does not offer direct PS export, a practical workflow is to export to PDF first and then convert PDF to PS using a local print or conversion tool. This is useful when you need tighter control over print-ready output.

Notes on quality and limitations

SVG to PS is usually a vector-to-vector conversion, so line art and shapes can remain crisp. However, there are important limitations. PostScript is older than SVG and does not support some modern SVG features well, including certain filters, transparency effects, gradients, masks, and CSS-driven styling. These elements may be flattened, simplified, or rasterized during export.

Text can also be problematic if the target system does not have the same fonts installed. Converting text to paths improves portability but removes editability. Also, PS is a page-oriented format, so artwork may be placed onto a page with a fixed size rather than remaining as a freeform graphic. For best results, keep the SVG simple, use standard fonts, and inspect the exported PS file before sending it to print.
