Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A DDS file normally contains a texture, while a WRL file describes a complete VRML scene. The conversion is needed when a VRML viewer or 3D editor requires a textured model, but it cannot use the original DirectDraw Surface texture directly.

What the DDS format is

DDS, or DirectDraw Surface, is a raster texture format used by Microsoft DirectX, game engines, and 3D applications. It commonly stores diffuse, normal, specular, and environment textures with GPU-oriented compression, mipmaps, alpha channels, or cube-map faces.

You encounter DDS files in game asset folders, DirectX samples, texture libraries, and models exported from applications configured for real-time rendering. A DDS file contains image data and possibly texture metadata; it does not contain vertices, polygons, cameras, lights, or a 3D scene.

What the WRL format is

WRL is the usual filename extension for VRML 2.0 files. It is a text-based 3D scene format that can describe geometry, transforms, materials, lights, viewpoints, texture coordinates, and external image references.

WRL is useful for older CAD and visualization software, browser-era VRML viewers, technical archives, and applications that specifically support VRML. Its text structure makes basic scene data inspectable and editable, but compatibility with modern rendering features varies between viewers.

A WRL file can reference a PNG or JPEG texture through an ImageTexture node. DDS references are less portable, so converting the image to PNG is normally necessary.

How to actually convert DDS to WRL

  1. Check what the DDS represents. If it is only a texture, there is no model to convert. Locate the associated OBJ, FBX, GLB, blend, or other mesh file, or create simple geometry in a 3D editor.
  2. Convert the texture. ImageMagick can convert many DDS variants with magick input.dds output.png. If the installed ImageMagick build lacks DDS support, open the file in GIMP with a DDS plug-in or Paint.NET, then use File → Export and choose PNG. Use PNG when the DDS has transparency or a normal-map channel; use JPEG only for opaque color textures.
  3. Apply the replacement image to the model. In a 3D editor, load the mesh, assign output.png to the material, verify UV coordinates, and check that the image is not vertically flipped. Normal maps may require changing the material’s color space and channel interpretation.
  4. Export the scene as VRML. Use a VRML-capable modeler such as MeshLab or a Blender VRML exporter add-on. The relevant command or menu is usually File → Export → VRML 2.0; exact names depend on the application and installed plug-ins. Save the result as model.wrl.
  5. Keep the texture beside the WRL file. Put output.png in the same directory and ensure the WRL material references that filename. Relative paths using forward slashes are the most portable choice.

If you only have the DDS and no mesh, create a plane, cube, or other intended geometry, map the converted image to it, and export that scene. This produces a WRL containing the texture on new geometry; it does not recover 3D shape from the DDS.

You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software if it lists DDS and WRL as a supported pair. A rejection or a WRL containing no useful geometry is expected when the source contains only image data.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

DDS compression and mipmaps are not preserved when exporting to PNG or JPEG. PNG preserves lossless pixels and alpha transparency, but it does not preserve the DDS mip-level chain. A cubemap DDS must usually be split into six images or converted into the layout required by the target material.

WRL stores scene structure rather than a universal modern material model. Physically based materials, shader parameters, tangent spaces, animation, and some normal-map effects may be lost during export. Confirm the result in the target VRML viewer and inspect the WRL text if the texture is missing.

Use a relative ImageTexture URL such as output.png, avoid moving the image after export, and test the file on the destination computer because some VRML viewers resolve paths differently. The final WRL is usually accompanied by the image file rather than embedding it.
