Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A PNG must be converted to WRL when a VRML viewer, simulator, or 3D application accepts only .wrl files. Because PNG stores pixels rather than vertices, the conversion must either place the image on 3D geometry or derive geometry from image brightness; renaming the extension cannot create a valid model.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores pixels with lossless compression and optional alpha transparency. 3D modeling programs, rendering tools, CAD applications, scanners, and image editors commonly create PNG files for reference images, decals, texture maps, screenshots, and heightmaps. A PNG can describe the appearance of a surface, but it does not contain meshes, materials in VRML form, camera data, or 3D coordinates.

What the WRL format is

WRL is the usual filename extension for VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), most commonly VRML 2.0 or VRML97. It is a text-based 3D scene format containing nodes for meshes, transforms, colors, materials, lights, viewpoints, and image textures. WRL is useful for older CAD viewers, educational 3D software, simulation systems, and applications that support VRML but not newer formats such as glTF.

Its text structure is relatively easy to inspect and edit, and a WRL scene can reference a PNG through an ImageTexture node. That makes WRL suitable for distributing a textured plane or model, but it does not turn a flat image into detailed 3D geometry automatically.

How to actually convert PNG to WRL

Use the PNG as a texture on a 3D object

  1. Open Blender and create or import the geometry that should display the image. For a flat image, add a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane.
  2. In the Shading workspace, create an Image Texture node, open the PNG, and connect its color output to the material’s Base Color. Connect its alpha output to the material alpha input if transparency is required.
  3. Adjust the plane’s UV coordinates so the complete image appears without stretching. Use UV Editing → Unwrap or the default plane UV map.
  4. Install a Blender VRML/WRL exporter add-on that supports the Blender version in use. Blender distributions do not consistently include a native VRML exporter.
  5. Run the add-on’s export command, usually under File → Export, and save the scene as model.wrl. Keep the PNG beside the WRL file unless the exporter embeds or copies the texture.
  6. Open the result in a VRML-capable viewer and check the texture path. A relative path such as textures/image.png is more portable than an absolute path from one computer.

Use the PNG as a heightmap

  1. Convert the image to grayscale if brightness is intended to represent height. White pixels generally become high areas and black pixels low areas.
  2. In Blender, add a plane, subdivide it into enough faces with Right-click → Subdivide, and add a Displace modifier.
  3. Create a new texture in the modifier, choose the PNG as the image source, and set the displacement strength and midlevel. Higher subdivision density produces more geometric detail; it does not recover detail absent from the PNG.
  4. Apply the modifier, optionally add a Solidify modifier for thickness, and export the resulting mesh with a VRML/WRL exporter.

For a basic automated attempt, 101convert.com can be used to upload the PNG, choose WRL, and download the result without installing software. Verify the downloaded file in a VRML viewer: an image-only conversion may produce a textured plane or a height-derived surface rather than an object with recognizable 3D form.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A normal photograph or logo contains no reliable depth information, so it cannot produce an accurate solid model without manual modeling or additional depth data. A grayscale heightmap can create relief, terrain, or embossed lettering, but the result depends on image contrast, resolution, subdivision count, and displacement scale.

VRML viewers differ in their support for PNG compression, alpha blending, relative URLs, lighting, and material fields. Use simple VRML97-compatible materials, test transparent images in the target viewer, and package model.wrl with its texture files in a folder or ZIP archive. Exporting only the textured plane preserves the image’s appearance but does not create thickness, collision geometry, or a watertight solid.
