Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A BMP contains only 2D pixels, while a WRL file normally describes a 3D VRML scene. The conversion is therefore useful when a BMP must become a texture or height map inside a VRML model, not when an image must be automatically turned into an accurate 3D object.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels with optional color tables, alpha data, and limited compression. Windows Paint, older CAD and rendering software, scanners, and image editors commonly create BMP files, so they appear as reference drawings, texture sources, screenshots, and grayscale terrain maps.

A BMP has no vertices, faces, camera, material definition, object scale, or depth information. Its pixels can be placed on existing 3D geometry as a texture, or interpreted as height values to generate a mesh.

What the WRL format is

WRL usually denotes a VRML scene file, most often VRML 97. It is a text-based 3D format containing nodes such as Transform, Shape, Appearance, ImageTexture, and IndexedFaceSet. A WRL can store geometry, coordinates, normals, colors, lights, viewpoints, animations, and references to image textures.

WRL is useful for legacy CAD viewers, educational 3D applications, browser-era virtual worlds, and systems that specifically require VRML. Its text structure is inspectable and portable, but modern modeling software and browsers often require an importer, exporter, or compatibility plugin.

How to actually convert BMP to WRL

Choose the workflow according to the intended result:

  • Texture workflow: preserve the BMP as surface artwork and attach it to a 3D object.
  • Height-map workflow: use grayscale brightness to create mesh elevation.
  • Direct file conversion: use the built-in converter on 101convert.com when you only need to test whether the source can be packaged into a WRL-compatible result; no software installation is required, but an image alone cannot supply missing 3D geometry.

Creating a textured WRL in Blender

  1. Install a Blender exporter that supports VRML 97 if the installed Blender version does not show a VRML option under File → Export.
  2. Open Blender, create or import the required mesh, and create a material for it.
  3. Load the BMP in the material's image-texture node and connect it to the material color input. Assign UV coordinates if the object does not already have them.
  4. If the target VRML viewer does not support BMP textures, convert the image to PNG or JPEG with magick input.bmp output.png, then use the converted file instead.
  5. Export through File → Export → VRML 97 or the equivalent command supplied by the exporter.
  6. Keep the WRL and image in the same directory, or inspect the generated ImageTexture URL and replace it with a valid relative filename such as output.png.

Creating relief from a grayscale BMP

  1. Convert the BMP to a grayscale PNG if necessary with magick input.bmp -colorspace Gray height.png.
  2. In Blender, create a plane, subdivide it sufficiently for the desired detail, and load height.png into a displacement setup or Displace modifier.
  3. Set the displacement strength to define the height scale, apply the modifier if the exporter requires actual mesh coordinates, and check the mesh for excessive polygon counts.
  4. Export the resulting geometry as VRML 97 and test it in a WRL viewer.

For a simple textured plane, a WRL can also be written manually, but the file must contain geometry as well as the image reference. A minimal scene needs a Shape with an Appearance and ImageTexture, plus an IndexedFaceSet or another geometry node; placing a BMP filename in a text file does not create a model.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Image resolution affects texture sharpness, not model detail. A 4000 × 4000 BMP mapped to one polygon remains one polygon, while a height map needs enough mesh subdivisions to represent its features.

WRL texture paths are commonly relative URLs, so moving the WRL without its referenced image can produce an untextured model. Use simple filenames without spaces when working with older viewers, and verify that the viewer accepts BMP; PNG is generally a safer texture choice.

Height-map conversion requires a defined interpretation of brightness, vertical scale, mesh resolution, and coordinate orientation. It cannot recover overhangs, cavities, material properties, or hidden sides from a single BMP. Applying displacement and exporting the resulting mesh can also make the WRL substantially larger than the source image.
