Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A DDS file usually contains a game texture, while an X3D file describes a complete 3D scene. You need this conversion when an X3D viewer, Web3D application, or modeling workflow requires the texture to be represented in an X3D scene rather than kept as a DirectDraw Surface image.

What the DDS format is

DDS (DirectDraw Surface) is a texture format used by DirectX-based games, real-time renderers, and 3D asset pipelines. Game engines, DirectX Texture Tool, NVIDIA Texture Tools Exporter, GIMP with DDS support, and texture conversion utilities can create or export DDS files.

DDS can store GPU-oriented compressed formats such as BC1, BC3, and BC5, along with alpha channels, mipmaps, cube maps, and texture-array data. You commonly encounter .dds files in game installation folders, material libraries, terrain textures, skyboxes, and normal-map collections.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an XML-based scene format for describing 3D geometry, materials, lights, cameras, animations, and interaction. X3D files are used by Web3D viewers, visualization software, educational applications, and tools that exchange structured 3D scenes.

An X3D file can reference an image through an ImageTexture node, but it does not automatically contain geometry corresponding to a DDS image. X3D is therefore a scene or model format, not a direct replacement for a texture format.

How to actually convert DDS to X3D

A DDS-to-X3D conversion has two stages: decode the DDS into a broadly supported image format, then place that image on geometry in an X3D scene.

  1. Open the DDS in GIMP with DDS support or in NVIDIA Texture Tools Exporter.
  2. Export it as texture.png. Use PNG when the DDS contains transparency or a normal map; use JPEG only for opaque color textures where some loss is acceptable.
  3. Open Blender and create or import the mesh that should use the texture. If the DDS came from an existing game model, obtain the matching mesh and UV coordinates; the texture alone cannot reconstruct them.
  4. In the Shading workspace, add an Image Texture node, open texture.png, and connect it to the material. For a normal map, set the image color space to Non-Color and connect it through a Normal Map node.
  5. Check the UV mapping, transparency mode, material scale, and surface orientation in Blender.
  6. Enable Blender's X3D or VRML export add-on if necessary, then use File → Export → Web3D X3D/VRML and save the result as scene.x3d.
  7. Open scene.x3d in the target X3D viewer and keep texture.png in the relative path written by the exporter. If the viewer cannot find the image, edit the ImageTexture URL or move the image beside the X3D file.

For a simple image-to-scene result, you can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free, without installing software. Because a DDS contains no mesh, inspect the generated X3D: an automated converter can only create a wrapper scene, such as a textured plane, unless geometry is supplied separately.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

No geometry is recovered from DDS. A texture atlas, normal map, cubemap, or terrain image does not identify the model, UV layout, material nodes, or scene scale. Use the original model files whenever the goal is to reproduce a game asset.

Exporting through PNG or another decoded format removes DDS-specific GPU compression and mipmap storage. The visible image may remain the same, but the X3D viewer will normally load the uncompressed or differently compressed replacement texture. Preserve the original DDS separately if the asset must later return to a DirectX pipeline.

Use PNG for alpha and lossless color data. Normal maps should remain in non-color data mode; treating them as sRGB changes their values and produces incorrect lighting. Cube maps and texture arrays generally require separate images and custom X3D material or shader handling rather than a single ImageTexture.

Use relative, forward-slash paths in X3D URLs and test the file outside Blender. X3D viewers differ in their support for material extensions, transparency settings, external image formats, and embedded resources, so a basic diffuse texture is more portable than a complex Blender material.
