Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

PSD files usually contain layered 2D artwork, while X3D files describe interactive 3D scenes. Conversion is needed when a texture, logo, or composited image from Photoshop must be placed in an X3D model for a Web3D viewer, simulation, or 3D archive; it does not normally turn 2D artwork into genuine 3D geometry.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native layered raster format. It stores pixel data, layers, masks, transparency, adjustment layers, text, paths, color profiles, and sometimes 3D-related Photoshop data. Adobe Photoshop creates PSD files, and they commonly appear in illustration, texture production, advertising, game-art, and image-editing workflows.

Most X3D tools cannot use PSD layers directly. For reliable interchange, flatten or export the required visual result to PNG, JPEG, or another image format supported by the 3D application.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an ISO-standard format for describing interactive 3D scenes. It can represent meshes, transformations, cameras, lights, materials, textures, animation, sensors, and scene behavior. The XML encoding is human-readable and commonly uses the .x3d extension; binary and compressed encodings also exist.

X3D is used for Web3D content, technical visualization, simulation, education, CAD-related viewing, and interchange between applications that support the standard. An X3D file needs scene geometry or other 3D nodes; an image alone is not an equivalent X3D scene.

How to actually convert PSD to X3D

There is no general, lossless conversion because PSD stores layered 2D artwork and X3D stores a 3D scene graph. The practical workflow is to use the PSD as an image texture on X3D geometry.

  1. Open the PSD in Photoshop or another application that supports PSD.
  2. Hide unwanted layers, preserve transparency if required, and export the visible artwork with File → Export → Export As to PNG. Use PNG for transparency or crisp text; use JPEG only when a smaller lossy texture is acceptable.
  3. Open Blender and create the target geometry, usually a plane for a flat graphic or a mesh whose surface should carry the artwork.
  4. In the material, add an Image Texture node, select the exported PNG, connect its color output to the material’s base color, and connect its alpha output to the material’s alpha input when transparency is needed. Configure the material’s blend mode for transparent areas.
  5. Set the plane dimensions and UV coordinates so the image is not stretched. Match the image aspect ratio unless deliberate distortion is required.
  6. Use Blender’s X3D or VRML export command, commonly found under File → Export, and choose the .x3d output. Enable texture export or copy the PNG beside the X3D file if the exporter uses external image references.
  7. Open the result in the intended X3D viewer and verify the texture path, transparency, normals, camera, and material appearance.

For a simple automated conversion, 101convert.com can process the file online for free without installing software. Treat any resulting X3D as an application-dependent conversion and inspect whether it contains a textured plane, usable geometry, and correctly linked image resources.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Layer names, Photoshop adjustment layers, editable text, masks, blend modes, and smart objects are not preserved as editable X3D scene features. Flattening the PSD reduces the artwork to the rendered appearance at export time.

A flat textured plane remains visually 2D in an X3D viewer. Creating relief or a complete 3D object requires modeling, displacement, extrusion, or image-to-height-map processing; PSD-to-X3D conversion alone cannot infer reliable depth from ordinary artwork.

Keep the exported image and .x3d file in the expected relative locations. External texture references often break when only the X3D file is copied. Embedding the image, when the exporter and viewer support it, avoids this path dependency but can increase file size.

Check color management and alpha handling after export. Photoshop may use an embedded profile, whereas the X3D viewer may interpret texture colors as standard sRGB. Premultiplied versus straight alpha can produce dark fringes around transparent artwork.
