What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format that stores pixels with lossy or lossless compression, transparency, and optional animation. In 3D work, WEBP files commonly appear as reference images, decals, color textures, or height maps downloaded from a website or exported by Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, web browsers, and image-management software.

A WEBP file does not contain vertices, faces, dimensions, wall thickness, or printable volume. Renaming image.webp to model.3mf therefore cannot produce a valid 3D model.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D manufacturing format designed to package a printable model and manufacturing data. It can contain meshes, units, multiple objects, colors, materials, build-plate placement, and slicer-specific settings in one file.

3MF is preferable to a basic STL when the receiving slicer or printer workflow needs scene structure, units, color information, or print settings. A 3MF file still requires actual 3D geometry; an image alone is not enough.

How to convert WEBP to 3MF

Make a printable relief from the image

1. Convert the WEBP to PNG so 3D software can use it reliably as a height map. With ImageMagick, run magick input.webp -colorspace Gray heightmap.png. Keep the image in color instead if it will be used only as a surface texture.
2. Open Blender, create a plane, and subdivide it enough to match the required detail: use Edit Mode → Subdivide, then increase the number of cuts. A low-resolution mesh produces blocky relief; excessive subdivision increases file size without creating detail that a printer can reproduce.
3. Use Modifiers → Add Modifier → Displace, create a new texture, set the texture type to Image or Movie, and load heightmap.png. Set the displacement strength to the desired relief height and adjust the midlevel so the light and dark image values produce the intended base and peaks.
4. Add a solid base with Modifiers → Add Modifier → Solidify, apply the modifiers, and inspect the result in solid view. The mesh must be closed, have no self-intersections, and have a thickness suitable for the printer.
5. Export the mesh through File → Export → STL. Blender versions and installations differ in native 3MF export support, so STL is a practical intermediate format for geometry.
6. Open the STL in PrusaSlicer or another slicer, set the correct units and orientation, repair any non-manifold edges, and save through File → Save Project or the slicer's equivalent 3MF command. The resulting 3MF contains the generated mesh, not the original WEBP pixels.

Make a flat 3D card or sign

Create a plane or thin box in Blender, assign the WEBP as an image texture, add thickness, and export the geometry. If the color image must remain visible, use a slicer and printer workflow that supports textured or multicolor 3MF data; many slicers discard WEBP textures or ignore them during slicing. For a reliable physical result, convert the artwork into separate colored meshes or embossed geometry rather than depending on an image texture.

Use an online converter

Check the generated model in a slicer before printing: a generic file conversion may create a flat plane, omit textures, or fail to create printable volume because WEBP has no 3D geometry.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• A height-map conversion interprets brightness as elevation; it does not recover real-world depth from an ordinary photograph. Use a measured height map or a manually modeled surface when dimensions matter.
• Transparent WEBP pixels do not automatically become holes or cutouts. Convert the alpha channel into a mask and use it to create geometry, or edit the mesh manually.
• Set the model's units and physical size in Blender or the slicer. Pixel dimensions do not define millimeters.
• Fine image detail can be smaller than the nozzle diameter or layer height. Use a lower-resolution, smoothed image when tiny relief features would disappear during printing.
• Validate the final 3MF in the target slicer. Some applications preserve only mesh and placement data, while others handle textures, colors, materials, and print profiles differently.
